Speaking of signs, those "National Wildlife Refuge: Unauthorized Entry Prohibited" boundary markers at National Wildlife Refuges really hack me off.
On the refuges around my area, I know the rules, including what is "authorized" and what is not, and know that subject to reasonable local rules, I can hike, hunt, fish, boat, etc. But that is not the case when I travel, and it's often not easy to find a way to learn what the local rules might be.
I have no objection to reasonable restrictions to protect habitat or vulnerable critters, and I get that human use needs to be controlled. No motorized access on refuges would be fine by me, and if there are areas closed to all use to protect habitat, just let me know the reason and I'll gladly comply. I gladly stay off the beaches during piping plover and least tern nesting season, even though I give up some nice striper fishing as a result.
But I think the signs with no explanation or of what entry is "authorized" are off-putting and send the message that federal lands are off limits for use.
A sign that said something like "Welcome to YOUR National Wildlife Refuge. Please use these lands respectfully. Refuge rules are available at . . . . . ." would be much better.
