What's on your Work Bench ? MARCH 2018

Hey paisan. The least you can do is have it finished as a receptacle for your remains! GET BUSY> Work at your pace, but GET THAT SWEETIE TOGETHER! Slat or canvas, or perhaps one of each?[angelic][w00t]

Thanks for posting up again, Steve.
The blacks were one of the rigs I took out to ohio for this year.
Annually, a bunch of us get together and do a deke from start to finish-It started with a small group, but now we have enough guys playing in the lobby to do around 8 or so dekes, from grinding to sealing, to paint to keel, usually on Saturday. Last year, we did whistlers, this year was teal, and for those interested in playing next year, the deke for then will be a canvasback.
Frequently, we have entered 6 of the finished stool in the rig contest, just for giggles. Last year, we entered singles, to see which of us survived the longest in the pool. Who knows what next year will bring.
If you would like to do a deke in a day, more or less, feel free to hop in with us. Carving in the little room off the lobby, the rest in the lobby. Kind of gives us something to do that is decoy related.[angelic]
[whistle] One was roughed in my shop, carved and sealed by Bomber, painted by Willy McDonald, then donated to Wounded Warriors, via Abby Kastl.
Thanks again for posting, Steve.
God Bless

Good morning, George~

Here is your latest "in process" work.....

(Sorry for delay in posting a "visible" image. I made the mistake of putting an ampersand in my filename....so, "&" has been replaced with "and")

I'll be sawing out a pair of Whimbrels this morning - but will be giving a talk to the local garden club midday.....

All the best,

SJS

George -

It would have to be a darn big loomer Swan decoy.

You can get torched if ya wanna. I had enough fire, heat & hell working in Steel Mills.

I'm gettin' planted in a plain pine box. Not to soon, God Willing.

Depending on where yer going, no use gettin' burned twice...[;)]

The Swan will be slat, already made a canvas/wire Swan for my rig. It's been recovered once already.

Painting blackducks this month. Being lazy about it, but enjoying my time in the studio whenever I make the time.

Ran down to the Ohio River a little while back with another local carver (Jim Brace). River had crested at 69' (flood stage is 52'). Water was all the way to the top of the 80 yd ramp, but we managed to get the boat launched by dropping the trailer down into a ditch that runs alongside the ramp. Saw this guy while we motored around in water over what is normally high & dry ground:

Bob, you make a beautiful black duck- nice highlighting focus to bring out the character of a duck most view, and would make as a uniform colored decoy.

Here is my first attempt at "making" my own decoys. The bodies are Homer foam diver bodies. I burlaped the Bluebill and Canvasback bodies. The Buffelhead bodies were Homer coated. Heads for the Bluebills and Canvasbacks came from Autumn Wings already painted but the hen Canvasbacks seemed too dark so I attempted to repaint those. The Buffelheads have Homer heads that I painted.

I would like to thank Steve Stanford for the excellent tutorials on painting these. I don't think I would have attempted this if Homer Decoys did not link to Steve's excellent instructions.

I had so much fun with this I think I will do another dozen Bluebills before the season starts. The burlaped bodies have a bombproof feel to them. It is a bit more work than the Homer coating but I think it is worth the extra effort.

Eric~

Fabulous job - glad my info was helpful.

The backs on your Drake Broadbill are just spectacular - congratulations!

Yes! She looks a bit better with her clothes on![;)]
The drake woodie is waiting for contents to be installed before I can finish him.
Will likely mess with a drake teal tomorrow, as there is a piece of cork with his name on it in the shop.
Thanks again!

All~

Here is a pair of old (flat-bottomed from 1950s or 60s) Herter's Pintails. I searched for about a year to find them.

I coated them with my usual epoxy + fine sawdust. They were then primed with a flat oil primer.

I took (and have already edited and organized) all of the photos for a step-by-step painting Tutorial for this species. I will post that when I can find the time. The Behr color charts will come sooner.

Hen in background is a Model 50 - and the Drake on the right is a Model 63 body with my head on it.
