WTB: Bird launchers....

Nate Grace

Have a 9 month old brittany and would like to get some bird launchers to train her. Not looking to break the bank or spend top dollar. Just want something that works. If you have any old bird launchers that you are not using and would like to part with, please drop me a line.

Thanks,

Do you intend to use pigeons?I wouldn't bother with a launcher.Check out the equipment in Lion Country supply.

I bought the wire box about 6 years ago, then made 5 more from wire with a small break I found in Nothern Hydraulics. You could just tether a pigeon to a whippy pole with a long light line.Main thing is to work the dog to point steady while you flush the bird.

Nate I will be in Newport, RI until Friday pm, but I have a four unused kick cages, a pigeon coup, quail recall pen and some other equipment. The cages have been stored indoors and are in new condition. If you still need equipment send me an email and I'll send you pictures on saturday. I live in West Townsend, MA.

ps be very careful using pigeons,if you are, and who you let know. They are a state protected bird in MA and can land you court.
Found that out the hard way back in '78.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the note. I may be interested in the recall pen. I am using partridge to train my pup right now, but would like to get some quail soon. What are kick cages?

What are kick cages?
Kick cages allow you to place birds in your training field prior to bringing the pup out. You can take advantage of the wind and mark their place with a flourescent ribbon. The cage itself is made of wire. Open the door side, place the bird in and then place bird and cage in it's desired location being sure to put the door side down. This way the bird cannot push its way out. When pup comes up on the area and gets into scent, and then points. You staunch him up, and if possible slowly and deliberately make your way into the cage, kicking around like you would if a grouse was holding fast. With a young pup you don't want to take too much time cause he'll want to come see why your kicking about. Then you just kick over the cage and the bird should flush, when you want it too. This way if he does break, the bird wont flush, because you wont kick the cage. You'll catch pup and gently but firmly carry him back to where he was on point, staunch him up and begin again. He stays on point, you get to kick the cage and he gets to see the flush.

I also have one manual spring loaded launcher. Send me an email address and I'll post you some pictures on saturday.

OK, cool. Those sound like they would work great for Kira. She is having trouble holding staunch on point. She scents and finds the bird every time, but wants to run right in a grab it. I'll yank on the check cord and repeat Whoa, until I can get to her and manually set her on a staunch point. She is getting it, but slowly.

Thanks a lot!
