"Very fine bird the pintail....

...He doesn't cheat, which is more than you can say of some people. He won't eat fish on you, like a mallard will, or even like a canvasback will. And he's the best looking duck in the business..."
-Robert Ruark, A Duck Looks Different to Another Duck

Originally did this preening pose years ago with the drake for a pintail pair that Hitch has. I always wanted to do a cork gunner using the same idea, so I carved an extra head while doing another frond preener this fall. Finally got around to drawing the pattern last month, and here's the finished cork version:

I did take a lot of pictures of the entire process with this decoy and would post them up if anyone is interested. Not any sort of a 'tutorial' mind you - just kind of a "boat build" progress pictorial - but for a decoy.... + and you can still steal any good ideas you see.

Sean Peters, the old webmaster for the former MLB site sent me all the files for my Carving Cork Gunning Decoys series that was in the reference section there for years. I do plan to re-work and update all of them sometime, and can probably incorporate some of the pictures from this bird when I eventually get to that...... After all, I need another project.

That indeed is a very fine bird! I really like the shading you put in on the neck area. Nice work young man.

After all, you are retired and have nothing else to do, right?

Nice job on the Pintail,

Chuck

You really knocked that one out of the park Bob, excellent work. As a beginning carver, I would greatly appreciate any and all "build" photos or words you might share on it!

You don't actually take that out in the field and hunt over it? That work of art belongs in a protective display case.

Funny you should ask that....I am the lucky owner and i do plan to hunt it....at least until I kill a drake pintail that is worthy of being mounted by Tim schloss swimming along side him!

Bob,
Even by the high standards we have come to expect from your decoys that is an exceptional decoy. I would love to see the additional pictures of it. The detail brush work is great. I hope you keep that one for yourself.

Bob,
I've said it before and will again. When I win the power ball Sat. get ready for a lot of carving for "a discriminating collector" somewhere in the northwest.
