Our 2015 Long Island Trip

Every year I look forward to going down to Long Island to hunt with my friend Chris. This weekend I was happy to bring both of my older boys along with me, this was my middle son Ethan's first trip down. Unfortunately Chris ended up getting sick the day before, so he missed out on Friday's hunt. Chris did feel better the next morning, so all four of us went out on the bay Saturday. Here are some pictures from Friday's hunt, the weather was very wet on Saturday so I didn't get the camera out that day.

Before Ben and I set our diver rig, we put Ethan and Molly up on the marsh to explore.

Then I had the boys set the brant decoys by foot on the shallow back side of the island.

The first flock of brant favored that side of the island so I had the boys sit up on the marsh while I kept watch of the diver rig from the boat.

Saturday's hunt, although very wet and windy, was fun as well. We bagged a few bufflehead when the tide was coming up. I then made hot egg sandwiches, coffee, and hot chocolate to keep us warm until the brant started to fly with the falling tide. We were lucky enough to get a banded brant. Not sure who shot the banded bird, so we gave it to Ethan. The boys also picked up a nice big boat fender while walking on the marsh.

Early Sunday morning we drove home so that Ben could make it to musical practice and his soccer game. Luckily the roads were clear and the traffic was light. It was a great weekend and a nice end to our season.
