Nice one for the wall

Update from my end. Haven't been too active on the site. Life got pretty busy in a good way. My wife and I now have a 6 month old boy at home. His name is Colton and he is quite the little character. Hopefully he enjoys the outdoors and fishing/hunting as much as his dad.

Been a tough, but fun, season for me so far. As many of you who had or have young ones know, it's a bit of a circus in the beginning. I would have liked to have gotten out more than I have but am quite pleased with the amount I did get out. Unfortunately, a spot I commonly and conveniently hunt was burned bad this year online. As such, I was dealing with very trained and skittish birds. I branched out a little, tried a new area. It was refreshing to actually see birds working and committing to my spread. Final realization that my setup isn't bad, I was just dealing with trained and shot out birds.

So far, the real highlight came last Saturday hunting with a buddy. This nice, mature gadwall was sitting around the corner from us. We heard his low grunt/whistle. We hit him with the drake whistle and he was quite talkative. We added in a bit of a wigeon whistle here and there for confidence. Sure enough, he flew up around the corner into our spread and I dropped him with one shot. My buddy's dog brought the bird back and he immediately mentioned it was a really good looking bird. Spoke to the taxidermist this week and he is anxious to have me drop it off and get to work.

The Duck Invader 13 continues to impress me. On that hunt we had the following tally in the boat: Me at 210 lbs, my buddy at 210 lbs or so, his massive black lab at 115 lbs, 10 puddle duck decoys, 8 brant decoys, 3 large goose floaters, 2 guns, and gear. Boat hauled it all quite safely and surely.

Looking to get out a couple more times before the end of the season. Some real good weather coming in and God willing, maybe I can get some more time in.

Ya got a mighty fine drake Gadwall there congratulations. One that puts a big smile on yer face. Appears that yer buddies Lab has a very good soft mouth.

If I had to choose between a Gadwall and a Wigeon as my favorite mid size puddle duck and handmade decoy. I'd have to flip a coin.

Always liked this DU cover Wonder Duck indeed.

Carl,

Thank you!

Vince,

Thank you as well! We get a decent number here in NJ but I've found them hard to target, so to speak. They seem to be more of an incidental visitor. Good news is, when they show up, it's usually more than a few. A really nice drake wigeon is very high on my list. Both these birds are very nice to see throughout the course of a hunt with mostly just black ducks.

Jay,

I had to chuckle when I read your "mostly just black ducks" (my favorite large puddle duck) the envy of many a waterfowler. Your in a very good place.

When I lived on the seam of the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways we never knew what would show up over the decoys. My rig was a mix of all, no matter marsh or big water, only the numbers changed. The more that the Mallards declined (mostly stocked) the more the other ducks appeared. Gadwalls a bit more frequent than Wigeon, but not by much. Black ducks, there are the early season residents, and then the later season red legs in very good numbers. How I waited for those Black Ducks...

This was the reason I carved as many different type decoys as there were ducks frequenting our area. At the old Ohio show you could see all the gunning decoys you could imagine, by the best carvers in North America.

A poor photo from 1983 or1984, of a gunning Gadwall by Jim Schmiedlin (out of his rig) prior to the gunning contest. He made some of the best.

Vince,

Buddies and I often talk about how we find it interesting that people will travel from so far to get to NY/NJ/CT/MD to shoot black ducks and brant. I suppose its the same for those in California with pintails, or Texas with cinnamon teal, or maybe Arkansas and specks. They probably feel the same way. The black duck for me is an interesting topic of conversation. Some days it's all we see. And boy do we see a lot. One hunt I had this season I decoyed probably 30-40 throughout an hour or two. Of course I took my 2 and just watched the show from that point. With that being said, to get a nice mature black duck to decoy is a small trophy for any waterfowler. Their uncanny ability to short stop the decoys and just watch you, as well flare out at the first sign of something off, really makes them quite the unsung prize. Decoying that many, watching them consistently flutter and hover over my spread, was a badge of honor for me. I definitely can see what you are saying.

Now wigeon...that is a bird that continues to elude me (along with a nice sprig pintail). They are here, they are here in semi-decent numbers, and we get some nice ones. They are extremely localized and despite me being in that locale, I never see them. I suppose that is what makes it exciting though.

Jay,

I very much enjoy the fact that when you, or someone else posts a photo of a very good bird and wonder of nature it stirs things up in other hunters. The feeling of appreciation, and of doing what we do becomes very evident. That's good stuff. Thank you.

Black Ducks have held a place of honor in waterfowling from the earliest writing and recorded gunning history. Brant & Black Ducks the dynamic duo of the Atlantic Flyway. Pretty much on most waterfowler wish list.

The birds migrate to certain areas and flyways and we migrate to where they are. There is a balance in that not just a quest, not easy to put into words. Could be why there is a wealth of waterfowl art, decoys, calls, boats, etc. I dunno it all just seems to be unique.

I've pretty much spent most of my adult life chasing waterfowl that have been on my wish list since childhood. Success had to be earned over a long span of time, and more than one trip.

You are correct about the excitement of waterfowling. Ya never know what will show up over the decoys, or over the pass.

Keep yer duck whistle tuned and handy cuz sooner or later the Baldpates & Sprig will show up.

Best regards
Vince
