That's a really nice pictorial of the show. Looks like an awesome event for waterfowlers that appreciate the sport's heritage. Hope it is a most successful show.

Good morning, Anthony~

Thanks for all these photos! I think we're all feeling pretty good about a successful Show and a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Here are a few more shots from the Contemporary Decoy Exhibition:

CDE - Sign.JPG

Although it was modest in size - still in recovery from the Covid hiatus - it was a good start to getting back on track. Here are some of the Al McCormick Gunning Class Black Ducks....

The McCormick Shelldrake.....

The McCormick Class includes 5 species most commonly hunted on Long Island waters - plus a "Carver's Choice" category for any other LI species.

The Shang Wheeler Class is for "fancier" decoys - honoring Charles "Shang" Wheeler. Although Shang was from Connecticut, he won the first-ever decoy contest - held in Bellport (east end of Great South Bay) 100 years ago, in the Summer of 1923.

Here are the Wheeler Class Divers.

Of course, I brought some work back from the Show. These rugged Chesapeakes will become all Black Ducks over the next couple of months.

Balabus Chesapeakes Three - BEFORE.JPG

They arrived with this South Bay - one of 5 I'll be rehabbing this Spring.

And, this Al McCormick Canada will get my attentions as well.

Thanks again for your efforts. And - as we discussed briefly - let's hope we can get the Contemporary Decoy Exhibition back up to full speed - and every year!

All the best,

SJS

I always enjoy the show, seeing folks that I only see a couple times a year and perusing the history. This year I found a very fancy painted Brant that Pete brought from CT, for well less than the E Allen blank cost! It does not appear to have ever been hunted, as though it has a keel, there is no hole or evidence of any hardware for having been rigged. It may need a little ballast too; I will test it before the season. I also purchased a canvas goose, just because I liked it. Maria asked "where is that going" and I had no answer!

As for some thoughts on growing the participation...... I think the duck boats is huge. It will draw the hunters, and the younger folks. Likewise, I suggest trying to provide more for the hunters. Working decoys, materials, parts suppliers etc. I know for myself, while I appreciate the investment and collection of decoys and paraphernalia, I just don't have that in my play budget. Mostly I am looking to add nicer pieces to my hunting rig. Tuckerton draws far more hunters than collectors, and the average age of the attendees reflects that. I suspect these ideas will be sacrilege to most of the LIDCA members, but I see the age gap growing. At 60, I am still on the younger side!

Please don't take any of this as being critical and disparaging. I have been coming for years and will come for as long as I am able. Regardless! Headed to OH in 2 weeks to do it again, then St Michael's, Havre de Grace, and whatever else I can find!
