That is awesome! I hope he keeps at it because he's got talent. Give him a high five from duckboats.net. We approve!

I prefer the Hen because her body proportions fit the head perfectly. I may need to draw a pattern from her lines....

Matt, your sons decoy is awesome! I wish my first bird looked that great!

Shopsmith night again. This time it was more learning to use a surface planer than anything. My dad picked up a bunch of rough cut cypress to make stuff with, including getting me some for a woodduck box. The board was about 1 1\8" thick x 12" wide by a bit over 13' long. We had to plane the board to the right thickness as well as rip and crosscutt. I am very pleased with how it has come out. We will hang it this weekend. Plus cypress is such a pretty wood. Hopefully it lasts longer than my regular ole pine one did.

This powerfeed was attached to a shaper and both were headed to the scraper. I asked the owner if he'd sell me just the powerfeed to which he replied "Make me an offer." I blurted out $80 and he agreed. They retail new for $1700. I guess he really didn't want to fool with it. I could tell it hadn't really been used much by the lack of wear on the wheels and it looked like all the damage was done simply by leaving it in the elements or mishandling.
Once in my shop I took the column apart and soaked everything in Evaporust, which does an amazing job of removing rust. Cosmetically, the head itself just needed a good wipe down, a new cover and cord. I made a list of everything in bad shape or missing and placed an order for those parts. Ran about $500 which most of that was for the wheels and the plastic cover. I sandblasted the painted parts, primed, and sprayed with color matched automotive paint. The steel columns were chucked up in the lathe and polished with high grit cloth sandpaper. Finally I reassembled and mounted her to my table saw.

A fun and satisfying little project that is going to see a ton o fuse in the coming weeks as I begin to prepare the heart pine stock for the ceiling and floors of the room above my shop.

Great job Eric! At first I was like "what's a power feed?" Makes sense now seeing it on the table saw.

Richard

Actually three. Each shaper has one and now the table saw. I bought the first one, an Italian make, years ago for $200 and it was in bad shape. Had the motor rewound, replaced the rotary switch, wheels, bearings and other stuff I've forgotten. The second one was Jeff's Powermatic four-wheel, and I got it with the rest of his shop. He barely used it. Now all I need is a bandsaw resaw feed. Those are harder to come by.

[size 5]Vince,

Looks like you will have plenty to keep you occupied until the fish are biting! Great stuff!!

Bob,

Thank you. Hope all is well with you and yours.

With guys like you, Steve, Jode, and Decoy Monster Machine for inspiration. I gotta keep my Geezer part of the crew up to snuff as best I can. You guys keep the bar set pretty high, and that is a good thing. Makes life very interesting and rewarding.

Keep On Keepin' On

Best regards
Vince

Thanks, Bob~

I just mailed off a letter (Old school kind) to Helmuth. I thought he might like to know his birds are still cared for - and maybe get him to participate in our March LI Decoy Collectors Show in Hauppauge.

All the best,

SJS
