Shallow water duck boat

I would like to buy/build a marsh/floodwater duck boat. I need to carry at least two people, a dog, and decoys. I would like to run a motor. I have seen many online (Power Ducker, Carsten Canvasback, etc.) but would like some recommendations. Thanks in advance.

This is the site to find that kind of information. Use your real name and people will respond very willingly with lots of information and opinons. It is very helpful to give your general location because of the differnt situations in which we duck hunt. Be sure to look over the readers rigs. Pete

I agree, please use your real name and location.
i hunt in swamp and marsh. if you are anywhere close to louisiana, use a cara, or peregrine. mallard river, is a good choice

Sorry Fellas, I'm not trying to hide. I'm just new to the site. I hunt in Indiana along the Wabash River and some small marsh areas.

Check out Woodenboat Magazine's issue of Small Boats. I picked up a copy from the store the other day. There is a boat in there on page 64 called a Macomber 15. It is based on the Westport skiffs which are shallow water river boats. Looks like you could carry a good load with either the Macomber or a Westport.

I agree with checking out the duck boat specs section. There are lots of options out there for buying and building a marsh boat. You are going to have to consider the style of the boat when you start deciding between building and buying. Building a boat opens up more options for what you want.

It sounds like you might be interested in checking out a Devlin Bluebill, or a KARA Hummer. If the two hunters are small then these boats would work, but the Hummer is best as a one man boat.

I designed a little two man boat for very shallow water. I call it the Peregrine. There's another boat, the Gator Duckhunter. Mine is alot like the duckhunter, but the reason I went to the trouble to design my own is that it has a lot of rocker and doesn't plane out well. That rocker has been defeated by some builders simply by making the bottom panel straight from amidships to the transom, instead of having it get smaller as in the original design. At least one Duckhucter builder succeeded in making a fast planing boat by making that modification.
