my one chessie is 18 years old
I think I should start carving a working decoy urn for her
Any help with how to do this?
Thanks
Pat

You fortunate to be allowed 18 years with your chessie. George Williams, a member here carves working decoy urns from cork and wood. Might try pm,ing him for some tips.

Patrick, Some thoughts-
What was the bird she retrieved the most? That should help decide what you are going to use to inter her.
Do you have access to cedar, sugar pine to make a hollow decoy?
If so, they get the decoy made in advance. Do not seal or paint until your girl's ashes are inside, then seal, paint, then use.
When I make a decoy for a hunting companion, I usually get a snuff can, which I fill with the ashes, seal, and glue snugly inside the inside of the deke. Might also want to include her first or last license.
When clue has cured, glue up the two pieces, seal and paint, attach keel, and take her hunting with you.
If you need images of the process, as in the hollowing, e mail me at
gwdecoys@Verizon.net.
BTW, you can also hollow cork for the decoy. Just glue a 1" bottom board to the deke. Same process.
Hope you have a new dog started. It is always hard saying goodbye to a long time gunning partner. A ready replacement sometimes helps assuage the pain.

You are a blessed man. I wish Kodi would have lasted as long as I do... 18 years with the same CBR.....blessed, indeed... I hope that doesn't make the back end harded.

I had Randy Cesco with Cold Front Calls make me call urn for my old man after his time. I sent Randy some of his ashes and he sealed them in the call. Now Gunner is still able be there for the hunt.
