The Texas Prairie Hunt

Well, got myself on a small 750 acre leases near Eagle Lake...Been mainly targeting specks since I have been here...I been lucky enough to limit out all but 1 day in seven which led to still one bird...Starting to get this speck call down...Got a friend that wanted to get on the lease with me whom has never duck or goose hunted...In three days he has already gone overboard spending near $3000.00. New gun, blind, shells, and you name it...Saturday was not the day to take a gentleman like himself...Five minutes before shooting hours I heard a mallard quack and started stuttering through the call...Out of now where behind me birds started to land in the decoys...Near 500 pintails landed in the open holes between the spread with scatterd teal and mallards...My buddy was about to grap his pants...I am afraid he will sell his house if we have more hunts like this in the next couple of months..

The one thing I am thankful is that he has a tricked out hunting machine...His Ranger sure beats the first 7 hunts I went on dragging a beavertail behind my short little legs across rice fields...Never hunted more than 200 yards from the truck till Saturday...Packing 150 Hot Buy GHG Snows and Speck decoys are beyond heavy once the drag starts and stops and starts...Huff...Huff...then stops...

Saturday was the first day I wasn't wearing just a long sleeve tee shirt, just blue jeans, and old shoes...It actually started to remind me of hunting up north...We had a nice cold front that turned temperatures from 75 degrees to around 43 degrees in the morning...Here is a pictures of one lanyard full..

We ended up taking 3 sprigs/1 hen, 7 teal, 1 mallard, 3 specks, and 1 juvie snow...Not a bad day on the Prairies in south Texas...

Hope all is well with everybody...

That is a great hunt. I'll bet your partner is a full fledged duck and goose hunter now. Congratulations, Kristan.

sounds like an awesome spot. ill drag all those dekes out just for a chance to see some specks those are some cool looking birds. good luck with the rest of the season

Kristan,

Glad to hear your putting it together down there. Sounds like we'll be hearing about more great hunts to come too. Keep the pictures coming.

Nice! Have you had a chance to chase redheads & scaup on Galveston Bay yet?

Not yet Carl,

Waiting till later in the year...Have some guys at work that have a fish camp in Port O'Connor on Matagorda Bay...Once all their other buddies get their fill of hunting I will be venturing down for a few hunts...My BBSB is in Paducah, KY...I plan on dragging it down here but probably will hunt very little from it due to not understanding water depth and other conditions of the bays...I say that but, sometimes passions drive you to do some crazy things...Can not press my luck too far with also hunting the bays every weekend...One thing at a time..

Regards,
Kristan

I hear yah. It took me a couple of years to learn my way around the bay here, so you have time.
