Pass Shooting.....

Is it considered unsportsman-like conduct? I have been scouting for late deason geese the last few days and the field I will be using this weekend in LOADED with birds. Limit goes to 5 on Saturday so I want to decoy the birds then. The last two days however, I have been sitting on a tree line waiting for the birds to fly between fields as they usualy do and I shot two today and one yesterday. I guess it just feels wierd not putting out decoys and calling at them. Thoughts?

It's fine. Especially if you positioned yourself properly and they are well in range. Jump-shooting, sculling, pass shooting, and decoying are all good ways to waterfowl hunt. Just have respect for the resource.

would only be for the best among us with some premium ammo, but if you are lucky enough to have a spot where you can take um flying by between 10 to 40 you are in a freelancers dream spot. Good luck and enjoy the late season 5 bird limit.

Pass shooting is a challenging and FUN part of waterfowl hunting. Some of us get lucky enough to be able to do it a few times in our life. It may feel funny to you, but it is a wonderful way to teach others who have never hunted about leading birds and guageing your shot. I say have a blast with it!!!

As long as you are not skybusting, and it sounds like you would not do that, I say do it if you want to. I see nothing wrong with it.
Pass shooting is a respected part of waterfowling if done ethically.

I think in your situation it's absolutely a fun and ethical thing to do. Personally, I am totally against firing lines near refuges and the like but I enjoy pass shooting at least once or twice a season. We usually get good and drunk first to make it more challenging but we always get our birds.

Just kiddin'

You know....I'm glad I read you replies today fellas. Basically, I'm sitting on a tree line between an alfalfa field and a stubble field of chopped corn and if they are low enough, close enough and I'm not aiming in the wrong general area, I shoot. I shot only one today and it was a big bird to say the least. I guess I just felt wierd because the last time I pass shot geese was about 10 years ago when I started. I am going to read the how-to thread on how to post pics. I want to show the board just how many geese are in my area. Its NUTS. I took a bunch of pics today and it was cool. In the last two days, I took 5 shots and ended up with three geese, not bad I guess.....

I was working outside about ten years ago when a flock of Honkers took off a field about a half mile away heading toward my house. When it looked like they were going to fly right over, I ran into the garage where I had laid my gun, and got back outside as they flew over my house at twenty yards. I dropped one in our field and had to go wake up my Golden who was sound asleep by the fireplace and send him on a surprise blind retrieve. My wife still talks about how puzzled Kimo looked as I woke him up, said "dead bird", pointed him out the door and said "back!"

It's been ten years and those geese still feed in that field, but have never flown over my house since that fateful day.

My buddy Pat shot his first limit of 5 geese in 5 minutes one day when he seen geese jumping from one field to another over a some trees inbetween ,no camo no nothing but gun shells he walked in the woods they flew over first shot brought 2 down then the second shot brought 3 down then he went around in a flurry getting the crips before they got away you talk a bout a smile on his face when he showed up at my place.
