Input Sought On Modifications To duckboats.net (Updated with info from our ISP)

With nearly 3,000 views on the topic about Photobucket I think it is time to open the discussion about what the members of this community want and are willing to do so that users can easily include pictures in their posts and for the pictures to remain viewable at a later time.

Briefly, Photobucket is now charging for users to include pictures hosted Photobucket but posted on other websites, referred to as "third party posting". Many of the members here used Photobucket services prior to their new policy and thousands of photos were posted but they are no longer viewable unless the Photobucket account owner pays a fee, which from what I hear is rather expensive. Because being able to post and see the pictures posted by others is vital to the success of this community we need another solution.

Maybe not known or understood by everyone, duckboats.net has its own picture upload capability. There is a 100 kb limit on each image to cut down on server space needed by this website, which in turn saves money in ISP fees, and prevents people from uploading HUGE pictures that overwhelm page formatting and make it difficult for readers to read a thread. However, there seems to be an inherent problem with the duckboats.net image upload feature in that people either don't understand how to use it, or don't have the ability to resize images. Lastly, and this is a big one, there doesn't seem to be a way to upload pictures from one's smartphone using this feature. With so many people using their smartphones to store and post images to social media we have fallen behind the technology curve in not having this capability.

Given the above I have contacted our ISP and enquired about modifications to the site. I have been given a quote of $1500 to add the ability to upload pictures from one's phone. On top of that I think we need the added feature of pictures being automatically resized since so many people struggle or resist doing that step themselves.

So I ask you, specifically what features do you want and are you willing to cover the several thousands of dollars in upgrades it will require?

Eric

I would be willing to increase my annual donation to include any necessary amount members need to donate to allow easier picture posting, picture posting from iPhones and any other changes you deem necessary to continue this site as the premier site left on the net. This was always the best site as far as content and an almost 100% "get along crowd". You can ask "dumb" questions here and rarely get blasted.

Anyway, I'll support this "last best place" as long as I am able. Thanks for your efforts to keep it up and responsive to the members

In my opinion, the upgrade would bring us to current technology. Don't add just a little more capability, go to what is now typical. Is the $1500 an upgrade/enhancement fee, or is an annual additional fee to whatever the current cost of hosting the site? I certainly will help absorb the additional fees regardless. I think it is important to keep the site attractive to new folks. Those of use who have been a part of this group for years will work out how to get some images posted, but I know if it were easier, I would post more (maybe not a good thing cost wise?)

I also want to know if that is a one time fee or annual.

I have learned a lot here and met some great people. I know I don't post here as much since it's such a pain to post pics.

I'm willing to contribute, I would love to just highlight a pic from my phone and add it in. Make it super simple that way everyone can post a pic with a smartphone.

Thanks again Eric

Eric, being a relative newbie on this sight, and not aware of how many users you have or how much you are already spending..... 3000 views is a bunch so perhaps a small annual access fee. even $5.00x 3k is $15k (I know you can do math!) seems a small amount from everyone would cover it.????

I'm not on here near as much as I used to be, but I would be willing to do a Branding Iron donation for auction? If that works for you, if not let me know where to send a check.

Chris,
Oh grasshopper, you are either very naive or very optimistic. Us old farts first have to be smarter than our phone. ;>)

I would be happy and more than willing to contribute to this upgrade. It would benefit every member on here. I have met wonderful people on this site. Thank you for providing this valuable forum.

The $1500 quote was a one shot deal.

I did some playing around and learned I can upload pictures with my smart phone. It works very similar to being on a PC. The problem is they are too big and need resizing which isn't straightforward on a phone. So let's assume for a minute the max size is increased, or the images are automatically resized, and you include them in your post using the current steps. Does this work and if not how does it fall short? I need to better understand the issue readers have with the way pictures are posted with the current system.

Good morning, Eric~

This is certainly an important thread. I am happy to see that Photobucket has not (yet) removed my images from my posts (I've been checking the Tutorials in the Carvers Corner). As I mentioned in Anthony's original post, I have been happy to pay PB ~ $100/year so I can post large images here - but $400/year is beyond the pale.

What I would love to see is a way forward here that allows for the presentation of large images. Because much of what I try to do is in the teaching/information mode, I want viewers to see the details easily (just as I enlarge the font to 14 - so my 64-year old eyes can read my own writing AND help me find my mistakes before I post). I can downsize (using Photofiltre) my originals to the 100kb limit - BUT they do not fill the screen when posted. Can the limit (and posted size) be enlarged at reasonable cost ?

As a Certified Old School Dinosaur, I remain one of the very few people on the planet without a Smartphone. (Cell phones are strictly an emergency device in my world.) So, I have no insights regarding the transfer of images from phone to site.

My own website is hosted by WordPress. I can post my images directly there (without first going to Photobucket) and can manage the size as I see fit (mostly).

Finally, I would certainly be willing to contribute financially (in dollars or decoys) to duckboats.net to ensure a sound future.

All the best,

SJS

ideally id like a button to import an image from a phone, where all you do is pick the one(s) you want it is automatically resized and is uploaded. i have no idea how all the coding or computer stuff actually works, but that would make life so much simpler.

could we get a dedicated duckboats.net app?

I believe that people generally like how Tapatalk works to upload pics (I have it on the ipad although I don't use it for pics).

I'm probably overdue for one of my modest and irregular donations, so I'll make one today.

Use it as you see fit--but I think making it simpler to post photos would be a good choice. Automatic resizing would really help my relationship with my wife, who does the photo resizing for me. LOL.

I too am old school when it comes to cell phones. I went from smart phone to flip phone to cut down on size and ease of carry not to mention monthly cost.
I prefer to sit at a desk when reading so a PC is more my thing.
However i am more than willing to contribute to a site upgrade to improve Duckboats.net. Count me in.
Oh yeah, make it simple to post pics.

Something that automatically sized and smart pone capable. Many times training or hunting it would be nice to post a quick pic.

I'd love to have a way to post pics right from my phone. I can still easily attach images to my post by having them hosted on my decoy website. However it's much easier to upload and post from a smartphone. I rarely use my PC anymore unless I am writing. I'd be happy to donate, with cash or a decoy for auction

Eric,

Count me in for support. While I'm not yet a phone surfer I may yet learn. Plus it sounds like I'll get more posts and pictures to enjoy.
