VDD owners?

I am looking to find out a little more info on a VDD we just adopted.

The house was just too quiet without a dog in it.

Thanks

If you can get ahold of Bill Sands he could probably be of some help. His kennel name is Deutsch Drahthaar V.D. Grasfluren, you might be able to find him on social media with that.

I'm just a GWP guy but I might know the kennel name.

Great news!

I was able to connect with the breeder through the midwest chapter.

Chief has settled into our house like he has been here since a pup, he is 2.5yrs old.

I can't wait to get him out in the field.

Any tips not been a previous pointer owner would be great

Glad to hear this Andrew. I know the loss of your prior companion was difficult. I hope Chief. An help ease some of your pain.

Was he hunted or trained any before you got him? What's the kennel name?

Be aware that these are very driven dogs. Prey drive is crazy high in many of them. That is great in the field, can be interesting in the house. Don't be surprised at some point if he finds a nerve to tweak on you just for the fun of it. My GWP (has 3 DD grandparents) will go through anything for a bird. I was lucky that he understands, for the most part, that I'm not into chasing fur. They can learn to go either way depending on what you want to pursue.

If he hasn't been on many birds don't shoot bumped birds. I always try to flush birds myself when there is s good solid point. Urging the dog to get the bird up can cause it to start doing it on it's own.

We need a picture of this new beast of yours.

Very nice looking dog. I'm fond of the slicker coated ones.
Since he has been tested some he should be in a good position for both of you to learn. Have fun!

I?ve owned a few dd?s. I love them. I hunt mostly upland until it gets cold and we switch to ducks. They are good at both. Good luck with your new buddy.

Chief had his first hunting outing, just shy of 2 weeks from us adopting him and been in our home.

He had a ball, was very tired today and could not understand that I left him at home today when I went to work, he thought I was gong hunting without him!

It is crazy he has only been with us for 2 weeks and it is like he has been with us since he was a pup! I can't wait to get him out again, hopefully before the big snow storm hits.

I would love some advice on a beeper collar, having never owned a pointer before and was very thankful that my friend had an extra beeper I was able to use.

What are you looking to know? I have a GWP and have had 12 as fosters through the GWP rescue.

Great hunting dogs, very driven, very trainable but Different than a lab in some key ways.

One thing I am really looking for is field commands that are used. He has had some extensive training and responds to many of the commands I have used over the years, but if I take him to a field trials event I need to be reinforcing actions with appropriate commands. He is also my first pointer so I am not familiar with pointer specific commands.

Any pointers, or recommend reading or videos would be great.

Hard to say as to what the specific commands were, but the dog was likely taught to heel, whoah, fetch, track and search...

They don?t teach handling commands like labs, they let the dogs rely on their nose.

Dog was likely taught some version of whoa, meaning ?stop/don?t move.? That?s pretty integral for a pointing dog.

?Hunt dead? or track, for recovering dead game...

Whoa is the big Pointer specific command. From a training perspective it?s no different than teaching a retriever stop-to-flush.

Today on a solo upland hunt i only saw 2 birds, the first rooster i was totally off balance and over my ankles in mud and muck, the second Chief was on him, although the rooster ended up in a tree to try to avoid Chief. Chief went quiet and locked up on point on the rooster in the tree! Rooster flushed and one shot it was down, before I even had a chance to even say dead bird he had it and came right to me.

I tried a bell today but I just can't keep track of him, so hopefully the new beeper collar will allow both of use to keep track of each other and for me to not let too many more birds get away!

He had a blast and I am super happy him him, he loves getting out in the field.
