HEY,

I just got an awesome Christmas present. A great buddy is taking me down to Dallas County for a weeks deer hunting the day after Christmas.

I have hunted cornfields and cedar swamps in Michigan for 26 years but have never ventured anywhere else.

Whats the forecast for whitetails like down BAMA way? The Camp (CASEY'S) Looks awesome.

any info to wet my apetite would be appreciated
Thanks Brian

Brian,

I dont know the outfit you are hunting with, but that is a great area for big deer and the number of deer is really good. Just a guess, but you will probably have a choice of hunting hardwoods (my favorite) or planted food plots -there is also plenty of cutover areas down there (lots of logging going on) and probably pine thickets. I used to hunt some around Selma (selma is either in Dallas county or close by) and hunted mostly hardwoods, but I am sure you will have a choice of a number of types of hunting terrain. Also the deer should be in rut, maybe a little early. They usually start mid to late December. It should be a great hunt for you though. Good Luck

Jaime

You will be a little early for the rut, that is normally during mid-late January. However, if they have thier buck:doe ratio right, it may start earlier on their spread. However, the later inthe year the better, right now deer hunting here is not to good. You should do fine.
As far as weather, you could see anything from low 70s to teens. And if it is one or the other, just wait a day and it will change. Our winter weather is that variable! So you have be prepared to layer or un-layer. Bring rain gear and mosquito spray.
Depending on your camp, you may be hunting over soybeans, rye grass food plots, hardwood bottoms, cutovers, etc.. Most likely if not for sure out of tree stands or elevated shooting houses.
Dallas county is part of the Black Belt Prairie, known for lots of big bucks and lots of deer. Don't be surprise to see 50 deer a day.
Good luck!

One thing to make sure you have is waterproof boots or better rubber boots. If you are hunting bottom land it WILL be wet and may have standing water that you have to get through. Weather will be vairable, probabley from low 70's to maybe as cold as low 20's. Mosquitoes(sp) WILL be out, but numbers should not be too bad. I will disagree with the other posters about the rut. The deer you will see will be in the rut. If this is a well run property the buck doe ratio will be on the order of 3-1 or maybe 2-1. What this means is that you will not likely see 40-50 deer per day but will see plenty and will also see several bucks per day(hopefully) Many people say that the rut does not begin in Alabama until late Dec or Jan. I disagree respectfully. Most parts of Alabama have a terrible buck doe ratio and IMO bucks tend to spend their time breeding instead of making scrapes. Then later in the season when many does have been bred and there is not a hot doe behind every tree the bucks have to look harder for them and signs of rutting appear. Good luck and let us know how you do. Steve Stevenson

Steve,

I completely agree with you, a large peice of property with a good buck to doe ratio will have a more "normal" rut. So if these guys are on a real good Quality DMP, he should hit the rut. Most of the areas I've ever hunted here have not had a good buck:doe ratio and some the rut didn't kick in until the last week of January. However, with our switch to more liberal doe seasons, I think that is changing statewide. Now if we can just get people to stop shooting little bucks, we could have more big bucks!
