!977 Johnson 55hp ?

I am working on 77 Johnson, needs a new water pump. The problem is I can't find where the shift linkage comes apart to remove the lower unit. Any ideas would be helpful. It is not my motor so I don't really want to get a manual for it.

I just did this on my '57 Johnson 10. It is probably not the same, but on mine there was an access plate on the side of the lower unit to disconnect the shift linkage. It was an oval plate with 2 screws.

Is that the Hydro-electric shift model? If so, be careful. Finding replacement shift solenoids is next to impossible.

Craig, Looks like a pin under the carb on the left (port,haha) side of the powerhead pulls out of the linkage and the long rod comes out with the lower unit, Good Luck

Tom that sounds like the only place I have not looked, I'm going up to the shop to check it out.

On the the smaller motors there is a plate on the side you disconnect the linkage on this 55 there is nothing like that.

When I did my 50hp a few years ago I remember all the linkage coming out the bottom along with the lower unit. Sounds like the same type of set up.

Some of the smaller OMCs have hid the disconnect behind the water pickup screen, but it all is good fun;<)
