I took my sons Ben and Ethan out for the youth weekend hunt yesterday. It was Ben's first duck hunt and Ethan, being 10, is still a spectator. We all sat on a beaver lodge with the decoys in a hole in the cattails. Saw a lot of mallards, woodies, and teal. Ben got a teal and missed on a mallard. Molly retrieved the teal and with some coaxing she brought it to hand. In the past she would get to shore, drop a bird, shake, play with the bird, and so on, but this summer we worked on force fetch and she has been coming along nicely. The boys wanted to stay longer, but we had to leave early because Ben had a Boy Scout canoe trip and Ethan had to go to hockey practice. It was a nice morning that has left us all looking forward to the regular season opener in two weeks.
