NDR - woodies

I had some light this morning so I grabbed the camera and hip boots and eased into a fresh water marsh that I have been scouting -

Some of the usual suspects were there and a new face -

I was a little disappointed that I could not manage to get a shot of some of the wood ducks that were screaming through the area but there was so little warning and they fly so erratically.......then out of the corner of my eye I saw this little group swim by on my left -

As soon as she saw me they started away making a wake -

I never saw a young woodie before and it made my day !

Very nice Sarge,

What a great marsh to capture wildlife with your SLR. The painted turtle reminds when I was kid trying to sneak up on them
before they jumped off the log into the water. Thanks for sharing those great pictures.

Nice wood duck shots. It's great seeing all the young wildlife this time of year. I like the turtle too.

I was thinking the same thing about woodie ducklings, then this morning we had a mom and 13 babies come up the field behind the school and feed in the garden. I wish I would have had my camera. I have a door to the outside and they were less then 20ft.

Hi Tom - Actually the turtle reminded me of a deer hunting lesson that I learned years ago............I'm not going to sneak up on anything so might as well get in a good place and sit. This marsh requires that and I had turtles, ducks and beavers all beating a hasty retreat until I decided to just stay in one spot for a while.

thanks for the kind words............how's it going with your new rebel ?

Hi Pat - that's a big brood and I know what you mean about having the camera. With this small clutch of 3 I wondered if that's all there were or if a bunch have already become lunch.

Sarge, nice photos, especially like the woodies. My guess is that the rest of the brood has succumbed to predators.
Did you see any nesting boxes in the area? It might be a good area to put up a box or two, now that you've seen a brood using that water way, if the area is large enough.

Working on those crunches and the boat. :>)

Hi Paul - There are a couple of boxes but they do not appear to be in great shape. I believe that the land is now owned by a good size company here in town. I may stop in some day and ask about that. If I can get permission, maybe you could splain the best way to go about it in the winter.

I recommend about 5 #s behind your head on the crunches, 3 sets of 20..........that way when you are dozing next fall with too much gear on, you will at least have a 50/50 chance !
