Seriously, not just for ducks, but for all kinds of birds, I imagine mortalities for a windfarm in the Everglades would be well above the national average--lots more birds there.

I hate Jon Stewart and that did little to change that. Newton Cook should have done some homework before being interviewed for that show, to me he came off looking like a joke and I'm sure he's not. They edit to make everything a joke, there are things you can not respond to and he fell into the traps a couple times.

There are plenty of reasons to not have wind farms and so we can shoot more ducks is waaaaay down the list. Big, ugly, inefficient, short lived and an all around waste of money, other then that they are great. Here is my business tip for the future, invest in large metal salvage companies.

I loved it! Newton was a good sport and he played right along with the theme we knew they would go with. I thought the Windmill dude came off as a bore, and the Elmer Fudd part was funny...all in all, very entertaining. When you get right down to it; we all work to save what we love. Nuthin' wrong with that. And we're signing up a bunch of new members!



Seriously though, as far as the windmill thing in the flyway goes; we just want it studied thoroughly before it goes forward.

Good luck with that. My experience at big energy projects suggests that whatever studies the project proponent does for their application will be along the lines of the company rep's comments--"the national average is 3 birds per turbine per year, and we all know duck hunters kill more than that . . . ."

You'll be more likely to get better studies if it's more than just duck hunters raising questions, so talk to your local Audubon contacts and especially to your state wildlife and Everglades Park or NW Refuge staff who might also be commenting on the proposal. The more the permit writers hear the same issues from multiple sources, the better.

HAHAHAHAHAHA that's a good one. Its the pet of the left and they don't need studies. What next, study if corn based ethanol is "green"?
You are right the windmill dude looked like a bore and he should have a mental tests because Florida has zip, zero, nada onshore wind power potential. http://rredc.nrel.gov/...aps/chap2/2-01m.html What should be studied is how much money that this country can't afford is going into this.

Hitch I guess the windfarm in Rugby N.D. and all those down thru central Iowa are part of the study. All along rt 35 and rt 80 the cornfields are loaded with wind generators. 10 years ago we hunted cherry lake in kidder co. N.D. It was pretty foggy saw a handful of birds fly right smack into some big powerlines. Going to check out rugby next fall see how many carcases are laying around, who knows maybe there will be a leg band or two on the ground. ps. dont you miss Malcolm Lavender? Rich.

I know that with fish, there are real problems with using carcass counts to estimate mortality. A lot of movement happens and night, and there are enough scavengers around that a nice juicy duck won't stay on the ground very long.

Shoot, around me a even a road killed deer disappears pretty fast, though those scavengers are typically on four wheels instead of legs or wings.
