Youth Day in CT

We were out early and had just about everything we were supposed to bring. John had been up since 2:30, dressed because he couldn't sleep. So when we got the spot all to ourselves I was looking forward to a bang up day on birds. Then the rain set up and we dodged it with the old tarp. Worked great, except the birds figured out that the best moment to pass a young hunter is when he is hiding under it.
Saw a nice mix and turned a few close but the Bass tournament that set up on our spot hindered the shooting even more. Like any good graduate of the Vermont Hunter Ed program John did not fire a few over their bow like his dad was telling him to do, and I had to bribe him with Hostess CupCakes to keep him from calling the TIP line on his old man for corrupting a minor.

Boats and dog and decoys were all working today. We will do our part next time when the rain is not quite so heavy.

There is a very special set of birds in the first picture. Two are from a scholarship auction I like to attend and the third is from the top carver in the East as far as I am concerned.

The three blacks that circled it knew better than to put their feet down in front of a kid with a loaded 12 ga and his Hunter Ed card. Very Cool!
