It's a greenhead--NO-- it has a greenhead

Had a decent hunt this morning back at the Rio. I haven't been able to hunt there for over 2 weeks because the ground is so wet. I can't get to my spot. Anyway, shortly after the opener I had 3 gadwalls come into my spread. Very quickly I had two birds down.
From that time on I spent the next 2 1/2 hours just looking for any sign of life but didn't see much. Then I spotted a pair of big ducks heading south and got on my call. It was enough to swing them my way for a look. They made a huge swing and came in right on the deck. Thanks goodness we can have three shells in our gun because that is how many it took to bring down what I thought was a greenhead. Pepper and Chili had fun today.

The pups had to go quite a distance to get this bird. Since we were supposed to either be rained on or snowed on, I decided to leave my Canon at home and take my Olympus point and shoot.

Great photos had to put them on the big comPuter to see them in all their glory. Thanks for sharing Al, looks a magical place. Dogs did well.

Dave,
I'm just glad that you enjoy looking! As for me, I am in my element. Sitting by my sides are my best hunting partners and I have some very "enchanting" scenery to look at every day. That makes me a very lucky duck hunter!

Al - Those mallards are real romeos...........what's next a mallard/canada ?

I sure do agree, Dick. I guess if I ever wanted a hybrid on purpose it would probably be a mallard/pintail. I have seen some pics of them and they are an interesting combination.

Nicely done in probably some unfamiliar territory...too much water

For me, it is just right, Andrew. The main channel is straight west of me and moving like the dickens. I'm glad that their is this small off-shoot of water that is still flowing down the east side. Hopefully it won't block or dam itself.

thats absolutely BEAUTIFUL landscape al... AWESOME

David,
I was born and raised in Minnesota. Back in 1966, when I followed the ducks to Alaska and lived there for the next 8 years is when I found out how much I enjoyed the mountains. As I go older and more tired of snow, it was easy to follow my instincts and end up in the southwest. We still get our little surprises down here like heavy snow storms but it is all right.

Hey Paul,
Glad to hear you enjoyed reading a short-short story along with looking at some pics from a day on the Rio Grande.

Paul,
I just want you to know that one of these days, I will put on a tie before I go duck hunting. I was impressed when I saw that shot of you, pheasants and the turkey! Sure glad you liked the scenery. I NEVER tire of it, that's for sure. Indeed, Paul, New Mexico is a very magical place.

When I first read your post title I was expecting some photos of a merganser! Great photos once again, and congratulations to you and the dogs on the hybrid-very good looking bird!

Al - Jeff Churan from Missouri here. I tune in to Duckboats from time to time, but seldom post. I enjoy your reports and photography. A friend of mine is coming solo to New Mexico to do some free-lance hunting. He is not at all familiar with your state. Would you offer some suggestions I might pass along?

Thanks,
Jeff Churan
