March "What's on your Workbench?"

A little check back tells me that this post marks the two year anniversary since we all started contributing to this monthly thread. Fro me what is so neat is that there has been a great variety of subject matter shown during that time.

My own efforts have been spent on painting this past week. With Westlake only two weeks out now I'm in a serious get something finished mode.

Here is a picture of my workbench taken this afternoon right after I finished painting. In the background you see my latest 2x10 redhead that I've shown progressions of. The head is shiny because that paint was just applied prior to this photo.

This is my little hen bufflehead, it's made from basswood with a walnut burl keel. As I started to paint this decoy I decide to take a little different approach. I've made many buffies over the last thirty years and I just wasn't interested in cranking out the same old thing. So I painted to a theme again. This time I tried to capture the browns and grays as if you were seeing this bird at twilight. Hey in the right light you would see oranges, roses and purples in those grays wouldn't you? And who's to say I can't paint the back edges of the side pockets in a tone of blueish green? I've got a couple more colors to add tomorrow and this one will be finshed and ready to head to Cleveland.

And here is that redhead. At this stage I'me ready to start the over glazes to bring out the grain to represent the vermiculations in the side pockets and scapulars. These areas will darken up considerably during the next few days.

With the big show just a couple of weeks away don't forget that we will be having the duckboats.net get together on Saturday evening at 8:00pm in the pool area.

What is on your workbench this March 2012?

Thanks Dave, Thanks John.

Yes I think it will. I am already hearing some gobbling on the warmer mornings. Nothing dramatic, but it seems to be starting early.

NJ pushed our season back a few years ago until the end of April to not disturb laying hens. Only problem is in early warm year's like this the peak of the gobbling is in late March early April.

It definatley helps lessen nest abandonment, but makes the gunning tougher.

First off I call Foul! Okay Ill make it fowl! John started his thread early again. I understand it was leap year so I am willing to let it slide this time but next year he can not start his March thread on February 29th. Agreed?

John, I like the thin paint and using the grain. very cool and it helps to show that decoys are not painted all in one sitting. Andy I love the swan very cool project. Just finding big enough wood much of been a project in itself. Jode, is that one for your personal rig or sold? Its a very cool concept. If I had more time I would start one but the bench is to crowded and turkey season will be here before I know it.

Thanks Brandon, Sam, and Paul.

This one is for a friend. I am gunning over the one I made last spring.

Larry, if our schedules work out maybe you will get a chance to kill a Gobbler over one! Jode

I'm up for it. Any week after B and zone 20 will have leftover tags. If not I'll come up and call for you, no need for me to shoot.............
