Whats on the workbench in May?

Geoff - Great cork gunner. It could only be better with a little river mud on it from our duck club. Every good decoy needs to experience the mud from Mud Lake.

Nick - Nice geese. Would love to see them on the water.

I left Tom out. Sorry about that. I like the Urn as well. I bet your enjoying it as much as I am that Merganser. Something special about them when they are for our four legged friends.

I agree with Pat. Geoff needs to get some of his decoys muddy and post picks. I know he duck hunts and rumor is he uses his hand carves in the rig. Let see um!

I've been distracted for way too long. I am so glad to see that the workbench thread is still running. It is always my first stop. I have been slowly SLOWLY working on black duck paint. Maybe I'll get some strokes in today.

Doing my best to keep up with Pat but I think I am falling behind.

Impressive bill Pat. Can't wait to see the next batch. Ill be sanding and doing the bill details on these ones today.

Nick, the geese look great, I love the paint and the variety of head poses. Your tails look a little fat, you could try bending the last wire something like this.

Keep it up!

OR,,,,,,,,,,, Does this wire make my butt look big?

I'm flattered Brandon. To think that the young guys are trying to keep up with the old man. :)

Enjoy the gift you've been given is the key. Always give it away and stay humble... Put your heart and soul in it and goodness will happen... Pat

Pat,
The worse part is I know I can't keep up with the old man. Today was a good day, I was light tan all over with sanding dust by the end of it. looking forward to seeing your next batch.

Brandon, I could really use an experienced saner around here.

Pat, Love your closing line, says it all and would make a great signature. Chuck was over one night and I turned him loose on a Sand Rite. Shortly afterwards it was dubbed the "Illinois River Carving Knife" in your honor of course.

Brandon, seriously the decoys look awesome. Is it just me or am I seeing some Lincoln influence in there?

i have been busy working with the fisheries department, whether it be creels, stocking, night shocking, it has seemed that carving has eluded me for too long. but i got over to Pete's house on sunday and got some painting done. i also have a blue bill and a mallard in the carving stages right now but they should be ready for paint soon.

Thanks Chuck. Each of the birds has a slightly different "butt", I could never quite get the lines I wanted there. Seeing your pic is very helpful - I'll save that to my file for future birds (and there will be more, once these corkers get done for this season).

Thanks Pat and Brandon for the kind words. I'll get a picture of them floating once work settles a bit and I have some more play time.

Chris,
You are really making progress. Having a mentor is truly the best way to learn to carve and paint. Your hard work really shows. Keep it up that black duck is really going to be a looker.

Paul,
I have been spending lots of time looking at classic decoys. Not specifically Lincoln but lots of MA decoys lately. Then again if someone says they can see his influence in something I carved I should really just nod my head and smile. I assume you were looking at the whistler decoys they are a new patter if they work out I plan to make a rig. Thanks for the kind words I appreciate it.
