My phone rang---

I decided to take a break from cutting firewood and have some lunch. So, I opted to take the Mule and drive down to the rio to change the scenery just a bit.
When I do things like this I like being prepared so I had my folding chair along, my shotgun, 3 shells in my pocket, and enough clothes to keep Santa warm. It was cold yesterday.
I was about to take a bite of my sandwich when my cell phone rang and I noticed it was Bev. "Where do you want to eat tonight?" she asked me. "How come you want to go out, Hon, because it is usually me asking you if you'd like to go out?" I thought this was rather strange.
Bev then went on to tell me how Salsa, who has her pups in the house, decided to reach up on the counter and eat the 3 pieces of chicken breasts that she was preparing for supper. She started to laugh and so did I. Both of us had forgotten that Salsa will reach up and take anything that isn't attached.
Bev hung up and I continued to watch the ice flow down stream on the Rio Grande. It is a rare sight for me to see ice. As I was sharing my sandwich with Habi and not paying a whole bunch of attention, the drake gadwall caught me by total surprise, because all of sudden there he was. At that particular time, my sandwich fell to the ground as I grabbed my Nova. I found out quickly that Habi has her priorities, also. She went for the sandwich and evidently thought, "The hell with the duck."
As you will see when looking at the drake, it was very evident why Habi re-positioned this duck three times on her way back to me. Damn cockleburs!

I was going to go hunting this morning but nixed that idea after I looked at the thermometer. It read 9F. That means that down in the valley by the Rio Grande it most likely is about 4F or 5F. This older frame of mine doesn't handle cold like it once used to. Besides that, there will be way too much ice in the rio and that is not good for setting up decoys and or for Habi.
Maybe I should go back to this spot today for lunch---

The pups are growing like weeds. They sure are fun to watch and hold. Salsa is doing a great job with them. There are 5 females and 4 males. One of the black males was sold the day it was born! Have another couple from Fort Bliss coming to pick out a pup in 3 more weeks. Time sure flies when you are having fun.

Took these pictures about 30 minutes ago. Just look at those fat tummies! They are exactly 6 days old. Boy, did that bring back memories of last Saturday morning, roughly just past 2:00AM when the first black male was born. I then had to hire a puppy sitter to watch the pups when I went to pick up Bev at the Albuquerque airport that night and by the time I got home, just knew I was coming down with something. The flu bug got me good.

Hi Al

Puppies looking great.
9 degrees would be a heat wave up here. It was so cold yesterday day that I had to heat the starter on my tractor with a propane torch so I could start it and move snow drifts.
Alot of people getting sick , hope you feel better.

I've never seen so many cockelburrs! Especially on a duck! Those pups definitely aren't under nourished. A group of pups never had it so good......The picture of contentment. I really enjoy your photos.

Great story. As usual, I can picture the hunt clearly. I love the fact that Habi has her priorites straight and that she can still get the job done.

That gadwall is beautiful. Really wouldn't mind finding one here. I know they are around, I just have to find the X.

Al - I have always said that the dogs at your place must know they have landed in a great spot. But even I did not suspect that the chow would be upgraded to chicken breasts and sandwiches !

Hi Doug,
You have to remember that I started enjoying heat as I got older. Twice this week I have stayed home because of the very cold weather. Yesterday it was 5F where I hunt.

Finally got over that darn flu. My shot this fall didn't help much. Boy, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I was able to cut wood for 4 hours, yesterday, so my stamina is coming back some.

Thanks for those comments, Tom. This was a really bad year for cockleburs. I'm just glad that I am using Habi instead of Chili. If it was Chili, I would still be cutting those pesky things from her coat.
Salsa is doing a great job in nursing and taking care of the pups.

Thanks so much. Glad you liked the story. That gadwall, by the way, was the very first one I have shot this year. Normally I will shoot a bunch of them but not so. I agree with you---they are a great looking duck. I sure hope that some day you find one at the end of your gun sight.

Hey Sarge---
We always hope that we have created a good environment for our pups!
Now as for chow, I WAS going to say that was just a freak thing that had happened with Bev and Salsa in the kitchen with the chicken breasts. She called me yesterday when I was cutting firewood and asked me if I had given the extra pancake to Habi before we left the house in the morning. She had gone into the utility room to wash another load of clothes and when she got back to the kitchen to go let out Chili and Chance so that they could run, she was going to bring that blueberry pancake out for them to share. Well it somehow disappeared!
We know that Salsa and the pups will be in the house for at least 3 more weeks.

Isn't it time you sat in a rocker and viewed the sunset occasionally.:)
wis boz

Jim, I plan on being in that rocker this evening while I'm watching the Packers play. Go PACK!
My camera will be ready just in case there is one of those spectacular sunsets. I know what you mean, Jim, however, maybe I'll start in a few years (10?).
