I put a 5 hp and it's just not cutting it. are you able to get up on plane? what about the transon squatting?
 
Ted,I have a first year Wigeon that I will run an electric 44lb thrust motor this year.I am considering a 6 or 8hp 2 stroke,
if I can find one.(wt 57lbs).One thing I noticed is that the adjustable motor mount is too high for a 15" motor,when the
mount is down to the point where it will hit the drain plug if it goes any further.I believe the mount shaft must be shortened in
my case at least.When I do get a gas motor,I'll remove the drain plug,slide the shaft down to where I have 15" from the botttom of the hull
to the top of the motor mount,mark it and cut it off the bottom.Hopefully the holes will line up at this setting,or I'll drill new ones.
If your boat is set up ok,I would have hoped that the 5hp would move it along pretty good.It's not a true planing hull.
 
I have the same problem with the transom mount. I am going to to do what you suggest also. I realize now it's not a true planing hull although it is advertised as a marriage between a planing/displacement. I have considered adding ballast to the front and foam in the stern. I have a transom mounted trolling motor as an option. I am not looking to go long distances or fast but anything has got to better than the plowing I am experiencing right now. My goal is a powered layout boat. I like the idea of a trolling motor to move quietly on rafting ducks.

Isn't the boat a displacement hull and won't get up on plane no matter what?
 
The only way I can plane it is to have my tiller extension fully extended and sit in the front of the cockpit. It is totally a displacement hull...at least mine is and it was the proto type I believe. I have the motormount up quite high since the front end raises under power and squats the transom down where water goes over the top rear corners . I had posted pics here when I had it on plane and have them on one of my other computers. The only way you will get it to plane is to put the majority of weigh towards the front and power the hell out of it. I love mine it's a super handy boat for one person to hunt out of and fills a niche.
 
Ted,I believe Lee and others have covered it quite well.You do need to get a tiller extension to get your weight forward,especially with a heavy
motor.I remoted my 60lb battery under the forward deck,Of course I'm not looking to plane,just get me there a little faster than I can row,
plus quiet and smooth.It's still a powered boat,so the motor must be turned off and motion stopped before any shooting
 
I run a 2hp four stroke Honda on mine. I don't have to go far, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 mile. It 's not fast but it gets me where I'm going.
 
Heres mine. I use a 5 hp briggs and stratton. Depending on conditions it will go 5-7 mph loaded with me and gear.

nice pics. Ok nuff bout motors what about color schemes? I have a light gray one but would like to paint it up like a TDB. whatchathink?
one last thing about the motor issue aahh never mind.

I have a unique situation. I can do the backwater grass areas in the morning then layout in open water in the afternoon.
 
Not so unique, paint it to match the water color for the open water hunting and cover it with grass matting or camo net when in the backwater. Around me the ducks won't come in to a big clump of weeds in the middle of the lake.
 
You just repeating what I said Joe? Or do you have a question about it? My Merc is a shortshaft and I have the motor mount all the way up to the next to last pin hole. I tried it from the lowest to where it is now and the lower I go the higher the bow goes. At it's present position, the cavitation fins are about an inch under water when I am sitting in the boat so I am picking up water for cooling when idling along. When I drop the hammer the stern squats and stays down while the rest of the boat is out of the water. I'll fire up my other pute and get the side views of me on plane posted up. It scares Mark when I show them cause I'm doing something not recommended with the boat....but thats what I do..I'm crazy and ya can't stop me man...
 
Sory Lee,my post didn't get picked up.I thought you said your motor mount was 15" above the bottom of the hull.I am guessing that you have it higher because the stern squats,when you put the power to her.Hell we know your crazy,but we love ya :^)
