Your Favorite Gear

What is your favorite piece of outdoor gear? Could be hunting, fishing, camping, etc... What are you glad you spent the money on, and sure to take with you everytime you're headed out. I have a couple beat up Helly Hanson slicker suit tops that go every where with me. They go fishing in the summer, in the event of a rainstorm. They go out hunting in the winter. their completely waterproof, and often get tossed on top of my truck seats as either a bed for a wet dog, or as a cover for me after I've been wade fishing. What do you have?

In order;
  • My BLF, hunting without her just isn't fun
  • River Navigo (free iPhone app that tells me real time river levels)
  • Filson Wildfowl hat

Mad River Explorer canoe. Best all around Royalex canoe ever made.

Campmor fleece pants--cheap and great under waders.

MSR Whisperlite campstove. Still going strong after 24 years.

I have to say that we have a great time running the back river system in the Excel 15' powered by a 6000 hyperdrive, I am fortunate that we can also switch to a 14' Gehnew with a 5 hps long tail :)

Kris, fun thread.

Favorite gear is a sculling oar that I bought for $100 with which I killed a $100 reward banded mallard on the first scull with said oar, thereby allowing me to explain the economics of duck hunting in a positive light.

My MoMarsh Fatboy DP with a 55ft-lbs MinKota trolling motor - my all time favorite boat for rivers, marshes, or layout hunting divers on the lakes. Before the DP I did the same thing in my Fatboy with a 1974 2hp Evinrude. Now it's quiet and just as fast.

Cabelas wool sweater.. .with Windshear... or what ever they call their wind stopper

Couldn't agree more, Phil. Or "+1" as the cool kids say.
Also, how did I ever get along without a good, bright headlamp?

A few years back I moved to go back to school, and suddenly I find myself doing a lot more walk-in hunting than I had in the past. I happened to have a decoy bag that has an integrated soft frame and hip belt. The decoys are kept higher on my back than normal bags and I hate carrying any other bag after dragging this one around for the past 3 years. The bag material isn't the most durable, but I will keep patching it because the company doesn't exist any more and I haven't seen a bag that has this same construction.

Two other guys have mentioned it already altough theirs was Cabela's brand. I could not think of going without my LLBean Waterfowl sweater. Mine too has the windblocker fabric inside. I do not hunt without it.

Just upgraded to the LLBean Helix waterfowl waders. I was using the other breathable waders they sell. This year I traded them in for the Helix. I can certainly say the price difference is worth it.

My marlin spike knife...A life saver when getting tangles undone...Besides my Filson jacket and bibs...But here in Texas waterfowl hunting, last years khakis cut to make shorts, running shoes, and a long sleeve shirt...

Boy, this is a tough one for me.

Everything I use to hunt or fish with is my favorite.

I would sum it up by saying- I guess a couple of my favorite hunting items would have to be based more on what I use most.

My Remington 11-87 Premier Light Contour 12 guage never gets left (on purpose, LOL) home when Duck hunting. It's about twenty five years old. I have been hinting to Mama about replacing it, but I don't really have a reason. For a twenty-five year old, well used piece of equipment, it shoots very well, and I seldom miss with it.

My second IS something that gets replaced every ten years or so. Not by choice however. My trusty canine friend. Suzy, my Black Lab Female for the present time.

I suppose one of my favorite "toys" is my 16 oz. insulated thermos with it's neoprene camo cover. I am not a coffee drinker. usually full of hot tea. I seldom leave home without it.

Other than that, it all depends on where and exactly what I am after.
