The elk parade

With the warmer weather the elk have started their spring migration from the breaks of the river back up to the mountains. Yesterday Spencer and I went on a good hike and found a couple sheds.

There are still a lot of bulls packing head gear so we did our best to skirt around them and hit a few of the upper timbered pockets the lone bulls like to hang out in. After a 45 minute hike up to the first basin I crested the ridge and saw three bulls bedded in the big pine trees. two had already shed and the third was still packing his horns.

We worked the area up and down the hill side for over an hour and Spencer found this one

We didn't have any luck finding the other side and I found an old mule deer shed on the way out, I'll get back up there next week and continue the search.

You two sure had an enjoyable day. What a great looking shed. Thanks for those pictures, Fred.

Al, as you can see in the last picture we got off the ridge just as the monsoon rain and snow storm hit, it's going to blow up to 40 mph today so I have elected to stay inside and enjoy my pajamas and hot coffee!!

Well, Fred, it is about 10:30AM and I have finished about a pot and a half of coffee, since 4:15AM. I'll share some pics with you that I am now processing from a walkabout earlier. Supposed to be a nice day with temps getting up to 78F.
Stay inside and comfortable.

Fred,

Nice to hear that I am not the only one that does that once in awhile! I never have gotten into shed hunting. I imagine if there were herds of Elk in Iowa, I might be a lot more interested in pursuing the hobby.

Dave it's a lot of fun , most of all it's a good way to get out and get some exercise, I have a couple back pack trips to the high country planned, places that don't allow horses due to the poor/ rough trails.

When I was home for Jeff's wedding last weekend, I woke up to these guys in the yard.

Three or four spikes and a branched bull in the yard along with a bunch of cows.

These Roosevelts don't carry the headgear that yours do on that side of the state but still nice animals

Cool Fred. It'll be time to look for sheds here in another month or so when the snow starts to melt. I agree that it is good exercise and a great way to scout some country too.

My son got his first elk ever last week and boy was he excited. We each had a cow only tag for an area about 25 min drive from town here that I scouted several times a week since the opener in Sept. I finally got a cow in early January, then they left the area and just came back in when Mac connected on his, last Tuesday morning. I have never hunted anything for so long - over 6 months I looked for them. It became my physio program to get out for a walk every day or so and it has really paid off as I am walking farther than ever since back surgery in 2008. I owe a lot of thanks to those critters.

Do you guys have Bison in your area too?

Mike

Nice Fred, the shed that hunter has is great but you want to see some of the sheds Fred has in his barn, it's like an elephants graveyard. When ever we were in there cleaning birds or sorting the boat out. The barn wall that they hang on kept calling out to me to have another look....

I found some whitetail deer sheds when i took down some tree stands last week here in SE PA.
My sheds look like tooth picks compared yours:)

Thanks Guys. Mike no buffalo around here except for the neighbors who have 3 in their pasture.

Rose and I are getting ready to head out a hike another canyon this morning to see if we can find anything.

Paul, Dave has your birds and will be getting to them soon, I drove over your harlequin three time then ran it through the meat grinder twice so Dave won't have so much trouble skinning it out.

You can thank me later!

F

Mike , Forgot to congrats Mac on the Elk harvest, as big as those suckers are they can sure be hard to find sometimes, time spent chasing them is well worth it , both for the mind and soul but especially for the tummy!!

Thanks Fred for dropping it off. As to the damage you caused it would not expect anything less from a Washington window licker.... Heck look what you did to my decoy I carved for you... :)
