"Maybe spring is finally here...." I was wrong

"FIRST IT RAINED, THEN IT BLEW, THEN IT FRIZ, AND THEN IT SNEW"

Well that is what the day is like in SD, NE, western IA and MN. Woke up this morning to thunder showers that started to freeze in the strong north wind. I think we had an inch of rain before noon. Now it is literally pouring sleet with thunder rumbling in the distance. Over the next day and a half we are forecast to get 6-10 inches of wet heavy snow with some places father west and north getting well over a foot.
I could do without the stress of watching the lights flicker but this moisture will be good.

I checked your forecast this morning after I heard about it on the radio and was going to send you a message, but I got busy (imagine that). At least is it moisture. It was an honest 80F here today and blue sky and heavy wind - crazy weather.

I feel your pain. not supposed to snow but I would rather have that than the large hail they have predicted and the 35 degree difference in daytime highs

Yeah "moisture good" that keeps going through my head every time I hear a big gust come through. :)
The ground in the southern half of East River and much of West River should be frost free so it will soak in. They aren't going to get as much in the north but since they are froze yet it could help the ponds.

Tom,
It was a humid 55 yesterday and now we are in the mid 20s so about the same drop. There were even thunderstorm warnings about 50 miles to the east today and it has been snowing most of the day 50 miles to the west. Spring storms, you got to love em... cause we sure aren't going to change them.

Hope you didn't have to shovel snow, Tim. However, I do remember hearing farmers really loving it when there was a spring snowfall that occurred right after they had planted their oats. Yesterday when I was coming back to the house from the kennel I heard thunder. That is a very rare thing to happen down here and especially this time of the year. The howling winds have finally subsided now. Two days of it trying to rip off our shingles was bad enough.

Tim I spoke too soon, we did get 2" of rain and now tonight and tomorrow a Winter Mix of moisture.

We got some of the rain last night and turned to sleet. Suppose to get 6-8" this evening into Thursday. I am not going to shovel. Put away the snowbloer last weekend.

Great start to Spring.....

Last week was interesting here as the swan migration stalled. Although this area normally holds about 3500 swans in the fall it is unusual to see them hanging around in the spring. We had them walking around the fields with the geese for about 5 days until they finally pushed through. BTW - I knew I should not have taken the plow off the ATV. Dusting pf snow with rain last night but they say the snow is yet to come. I too have put the shovel away. With 40's over the week end it won't last long.

Now we're getting the ice down here in Kansas. So far, no lights flickering, but the blasted elms are getting their nature's pruning, and I'll have some limb gathering to do later this week. And, it's opening day of turkey season here ... oh, well. At least, I'm glad I'm not on the road to Manitoba right now as previously planned. And I'm very, very thankful that I'm no longer flying pipeline patrol between here and Minnesota as I was doing last year.

It would probably best to have a combination ice chipper slushblower here. Heck it will all melt on Saturday so I'm not going to do much more then make a path anywhere. I'm glad the wind is no longer roaring like it was, the trees don't look like they could take too much more.

Al,
You are showing your age, not that I don't remember oats being planted pretty regularly too. It is hard to find oats around this part of the country anymore. Unless they have a couple horses nobody plants it. I know if you need straw for pens or lawn and garden work it can be hard to find. Use to be that everyone had straw bales in their barns.

Yep, I was wrong for sure.

This is just after the rain and sleet but before the snow.

Not getting back into the garden very soon.

After the snow this was a common scene.

Probably a good thing I wasn't sitting by a fire during an ice storm.

Swinging mailboxes work.

Thought this was neat looking over at my neighbor.

I barely got the camera up in time to catch this pair of Woodies flying over. Keeps it ducks related. The moisture received in SD is also good news for them.

I cleared off the deck and threw out some seeds for all the birds hanging around the feeders. They couldn't all fit on them.
There were times when there were 50 House Finches, nearly the same amount of Golden Finches showed up.

Cheap lens through the patio window but you get the idea of how hungry the birds were.

The sun popped out for a moment today and everything is melting. Sunday the forecast is for 50 and rain. The snow will be soon gone but the all the downed branches will be waiting.
My town was lucky and only lost power for a couple hours yesterday. Some have been without for three days and it could be a couple more before it is back.

Well, it is good moisture.

Super shots, Tim. I can tell this is going to be a good year! Just talked with my high school duck hunting buddy and his wife who live in Ortonville. They said that they got 13 inches of snow.

I got the snow blower out this morning. Hopefully for the last time. To cold to work on my boat in the shop. I nave one turkey coming around I am fatting him up on corn.

Al,
You will have to talk to your buddy again, I think they are getting more snow and ice. This one is going a little farther north then the last storm. Thankful for that... we need a few days to recover.
I too am much more optimistic about this year. Since about Christmas we have been above normal on precipitation, it still takes awhile to get that soil moisture built back up.

Pete,
Nice owl, I was sure you were a garden gnome type of guys. :) I did snowblow on thursday but it would have been all clear by saturday. Needed something to do anyway when the electricity was flickering

90% of the snow is gone now and the grass is already green.
