Blown Up Shotgun

I know most of you don't know me as I don't really post. But I have been reading threads and thought you guys might like this picture and story.

Here is a pic my friend took of me after our hunt on Munuscong Bay on the St Mary's River back in November. Here is the Rem SP 870 I blew up. Fired on a greenhead and thought I just missed. Racked out the shell and took a second, and what turned out to be my last shot of the day and forever for the barrel). The first shell I pulled the trigger on partially fired and the wad lodged in the barrel. When I pulled the trigger seconds later on the second shot.......BLAMO!

Yes....I feel very blessed and fortunate that none of us got a scratch.

So....lookin for a 28" matte barrel for an 870.

I hope posting this might help prevent someone else getting hurt aometime. Even though with this incident I don't think it could have been prevented as it didn't feel like a misfire. But feel free to show this to kids and such if you like.

What a shame...that old SP coulda been somebody ;o)

I'm glad nobody was injured. Did you find either wad?
Wow that had to be a shock.

Can you feel the frets on your banjo yet!Had a guy that did that with a Perazi O/U at the trap range..blew the bottom barrel out at the end of the forearm. His hand was numb for quite a while and lucky there too that no one was seriously injured. Nice sit by the way..listened to one of the sample songs and will hit the rest too.

Marked Steel Full....well not early Precision Reloading Alliant Steel powder data full. Ah, live and learn. Glad no one was hurt.
Liked the bands web site. Cool buss. I think I found my Xmass present CD.

Had the same thing happen to my 870 in a dove field several years ago. Had the shells been wet? I think that the shells I had gotten from a buddy had gotten wet at some time and the powder had gone bad. Glad you are okay and I know that is a scary thing when you look at that bananna peel that used to be a barrel. Good luck finding a barrel, I finally gave up and ordered one from Cabelas.

hmm, new lamp , mike stand , there gotta be something to make from that.
Glad you were not hurt, and welcome aboard.

Thanks to Jay for posting the picture. I don't get why it wouldn't post. It was only 87KB or there abouts. Oh well.

The shell was a factory load Federal Tungsten 3" #4. It had gotten wet in my bellow pocket at the bottom of my wading jacket when I had to go in a little deeper than expected after a run away decoy the day before. I don't blaim Federal at all. Sh** happens. I really feel lucky. After I knew I didn't get a scratch, I was then very concerned with my hearing as a musician. I had ringing for a day and then it seemed ok. Freakin loud.....like someone had the end of a barrel next to your head and let one loose....even louder than that.

Thanks to all for the kind words about our music. For the record, I am a mandolin player..... and in the bluegrass world calling me a banjo player is like calling me a troglodyte. Sorta kidding. Banjo players are the butt of most jokes. We are actually just jealous of banjo players cause they are the loudest and get all the chicks. I guess the girls figure if a man can move his fingers that fast......well.....

We have a new album coming out in less than a month....hoping it comes back from the duplicators before X-Mas but I am not holding my breath.

Headed down from the arctic of the U.P. to Northern Indiana to shoot geese and ducks with Jay this weekend. Just can't get enough.

made me think of the old joke
what do you call a guy who hangs out with musicians all day ?

A drummer.

I sing really well .......................if the radios wide open.

Sorry about the banjo remark..not really..make sure to check the action parts..bolt..pump arms..etc for any bending or cracking before cutting loose with another shell. You and Jay have a good time..you'll only be about an hour& a half from me..unless Jay brings you closer. I'm in Sturgis, right on the In./Mi. border.

Sorry for the mishap but I'm thinkin' that you could sell it some city slicker as a magnaported barrel.

Gary

Wow, I guess somebody does hunt Waiska Bay Adam! Who knew? Bill, sounds like you're on the righteous path. That's my plan! I mean, I'll take an old school bus for duck camp at this point!

Bellaire Michigan? How bout that. My mom grew up in and around Bellaire, and my grandmother (Nora Smith) lived there for years throughout my childhood.

Dave

P.S. My mom transplanted though, and I was born and lived my entire life in Tenn. But I have tons of relatives in Michigan.

Fun Fun Fun, I had a chiefs special detonate in my hand once. Blew off the topstrap and the chamber the round was in plus peeled the sides off the the adjacent chambers. luckily the rounds in there did not cook off also, man did that sting! I've been trying to listen to some stuff from your site but my archaic (and soon to be replaced) computer and dial up connection are'nt up to the task. I think I'd like it. I'm pretty eclectic in my tastes but tend to like Celtic music best. Not the Airy artsy Enya @#$#@%. but stuff like Great Big Sea, Solas, Wicked Tinkers, Bad Haggis, Cruiskeen, and the standby's the Clancy's, Tommy Makem etc. I love the Pipes, my neighbors don't. If your albums out I'm tempted to take a blind shot. since we're all tradeing locales I'm in LaSalle down between Toledo and Monroe.

As you might tell from my Hoosier friend Jay.....we have talked about hooking up on Waiska next season. Nice layout boat Bill. I dig it. We play in Bellaire and in Boyne Falls every summer.

Eric, wait and get our new album if your on the fence. It will be much better than our freshman effort. Sorry you can't download anything right now. I know the frustration of computers. Good news is, they aren't that expensive anymore....bad news.....you could spend the four hundy on some more goose decoys instead. I was the guy who touched base with you about yer Lowe jon for sale. I was gonna try and hook up with you while hunting Harsen's the last weekend of the season. Never worked out. We spanked em though. Still want a 14' jon and trailer.
