Here are a few photos of the completed Drake Mallard I carved in the 2 tutorials (which now reside in the Carvers Corner):
This is finished as a "mantelpiece" bird - not intended for the rig. I sealed it with 2 coats of varnish then primed it with oil primers - Rustoleum Flat Black and Flat White. Then, I used tube oils and just turpentine for the topcoats.
I am moving toward oils for my decorative birds for several reasons: 1) it's traditional - pretty much every decoy before WW II was painted with oils; 2) its depth and richness; 3) the time and texture to play around with the paint to blend and experiment with different effects, and 4) it gives the heirloom quality I want for all of my birds.
