Attn. Jamus Driscoll

hey Nate--
Thanks for the post. I did not sell the fatboy. I had some interest, but we couldn't find middle ground on price. Santa did come early however and there is an 8" jointer in the shop right now. Broke down and got a grizzly

how are you doing?

Things are going well, just wicked busy. So, you got a Grizzly. How do you like it so far? I have been thinking of getting one also, but holding out to see if I can find a jointer locally. Was the shipping really expensive?

Take care.

Nate

Excuse me for barging in but I see you talking about jointers. I have a DJ20 and like it but am playing with the idea of restroing this old rascal and selling the DJ20. It goes nicely with my vintage Delta bandsaw. What do you think I could get for a DJ20 in very good condition? If you were me would you stick with the DJ20 or go for the vintage triple badged Delta/Rockwell/Crescent? I might miss the extra foot of bed but I think the four knife cutter would be real sweet.

Well, I am a true Yankee and I like to fix old things up to get as much life and use out of them that I can. There is something fun and satisfying about taking something old and making it like new again, and then using it to make or build something. I spent an hour lastnight taking apart an old Rockwell orbital sander that must be 30 years old. I could have gone to Loews and bought a new one, but I like the way this old one fairs out wood and epoxy. It was caked inside with wood and epoxy dust and the on/off switch was gunked up. Got it running good again.

So, I would fix that old jointer up and use it. Sell the other one for what you can and use the $$ toward refurbing that old one. How do you find those old gems? I'm looking for an older one like that to fix up and use. I have a ton of oak to join up for the dory. Need to make a rudder and some other stuff.

Best,
Nate

Yes, that is a little too rich for me. I'd rather spend a little less and then spend the time and money on parts fixing it up. Plus, I need to clear some space or build a bigger shed to house all of my tools. Or, just buy a house with a barn in the back.

I'll keep looking.

Nate

If he's close enough I'd call him. A lot of guys put a high dollar on them but will take less when a little time goes by with no offer. When it comes to old iron you can always toss out a rock bottom offer and work up.

Nate,

Remember when you came down to buy the band saw in West Hartford? Add an hour to get to Danbury.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes, that was about a 2.5 hour drive for me. Not bad. I think I will hold out for now. I have a 12" planer and have been thinking of maybe just getting a 6" jointer. Finding the space for it has become the main issue.

There was a craftsman near me who passed away last year and he had a ton of old woodworking tools. He had an old cast iron jointer that was something like 16" wide, probably 60 years old. A nice tool for sure. Only took up a third of his workshop!

Best,
Nate
