You guys that hunt out of Broadbills or Scaups, do you sit on the floor of the boat and shoot from a sitting position to keep the profile as low as possible? I'm an older guy, kind of set in my ways and I shoot a lot better from a standing position. My buddy and I hunt off seats in our Snow Goose and stand up to shoot from a higher profile cattail blind, I think it would be awkward for me to stand up to shoot from sitting on the floor.

If I build a scaup and shoot off bucket stools from a higher built up boat blind, am I defeating the purpose of the sneak box style boat?

The birds would be even safer if I had to stand up off the floor of my BB2 or Zackbox. I made a blind for my BB2 that allowed me to sit at bucket height..and I sometimes shoot from sitting on the floor. Usually I shoot off the floor later in the season when the vegetation is lower so I don't stick up like a billboard. If I am anchored out for divers with longlines, I sit on the floor as low as possibe..at least as low as the motor.

I either sit on the floor or lay back on a back rest like used in a layout boat depending where I am hunting, there have been times we hide in taller brush like other normal boats and we set on the decks and stand to shoot but not often I like to hunt out more open as the birds are shy of that tall stuff when they get down here a floating bunch of lilly pads is my normal hiding spots and I use the back rest there

I hunt sitting in the bottom of the boat most of the time (marsh boat or john boat). I think the lower profile helps hide the boat from the ducks for sure.
One option an older buddy of my has adopted is a small beach chair. Easier on the back and knees yet maintains the lower profile that we prefer when hunting in thin vegetation.


We don't take long, passing shots when hunting this way. I know that I definately can't swing as well with a crossing bird, so we just let them keep swinging until they're hovering over the decoys. Even I can hit those shots!!! :D
