ZTW update

The hull is finally finished. I put a coat of FME on it this morning. A second coat when that is dry and I can permanently flip it over. With the paint, it is starting to look like a duck boat. It won't be done for the opener here in PA, but I should have no problem getting to hunt out of it this year, including the trip to VA with Steve.

Darin~

Congratulations on the progress!

Question: What are you using for your bow eye? It looks galvanized.

Thanks,

SJS

The bow eye is a SS bow eye that I sprayed with self etching primer. I did the same with the chrome bow/stern lights and handles. I looked up on line how to paint chrome and that is what it said to do. I'm hoping the FME will stick to it now.

Can't wait to go...that will tuck in nicely to the Eastern Shore marsh grass. She's coming along nicely...

I'm going to get Maxx into the canoe and maybe the sneakboat this weekend. Wish me luck!

I figured it was time for a update with the latest pictures. Seems like it is slow going at times, but I am seeing an end to the tunnel. A couple of braces and a shelf for the gas tank and battery and it will be ready for the deck.

I also made a run down by Pittsburgh on Friday and picked up a motor and trailer. The motor starts up on the first or second pull and runs nice. I don't see water coming out, so I think it needs a new impeller. I'm going to order one off ebay this week and hopefully that fixes the problem. The trailer is galvanized and has 12" tires, which is what I wanted for running to the coast.

You're getting close!

It'll be ready before you know it.

My experience though, that's a LOT of motor for that little boat! Be careful!

When are you guys heading East?

You're right, that is a lot of motor, but the price was right. If it's too scary I'll look for something smaller.

What's really scary is according to the formula on the fish & boat commission web sight, they would rate it for a 15 hp.

We're going east Dec 18-22. It'll be my first trip out there to hunt. I'm really looking forward to it.

Darrin, I think there may be a miscalculation there some where on the motor math. What is the length over all and the width at the transom? 15 sounds way big.

Just a sanity check: Devlin Broadbill Specifications

Length: 10ft 8in
Beam: 4ft 6-1/2in
Draft: 4-1/2" (loaded)
Displacement: 105lbs
Power: 15HP outboard

The Mallard (12'-11" X 4'-10") is also rated at 15 HP.

Scott, what is the transom width? Beam is irrelavent when your talking horsepower.

Howard,

I don't know their transom widths, it wasn't listed on the Devlin specification page, but they are sneak boxes that pictorially don't look that "abnormal" with respect to lines coming back to the transom. Maybe the guys who've made them or that have the plans can fill us in. My point was simply that sneak boxes in the 11-12 ft range can be rated as high as the 15-hp. If Darin has run the numbers and come up with 15-hp he may be right on. Personally I run a 16-HP 2-stroke on my Kuhn aluminum take off of a Broadbill and it doesn't seem scary. With the outboard down on the lowest tilt setting she dances along at 25 mph on calm water. Set up a notch or two the bow comes up and she is less likely to bury the bow in chop - she drops to 15 mph @wot with me and my fat monster dog. I did upgrade to a very solid Bimini style spray shield to protect her from the possibility of a green wave coming in over the bow.

Howard,
I was going by what the Pa fish & boat has on their website. If you consider it a v-hull you take length (12') X widest width (4') X 0.8 - 25 and then round up to next 5. ((12x4)x0.8)-25= 13.4 round to 15.

If you call it a flat bottom then ((12x4)x0.5-15=9.0 round to 10

The width at the transom is 3'

Here's a link to their instructions:

Darin, Table 183.53 of the USCG Boat Builders Handbook/ Factor= Boat length X transom width. 12' x 3'= 36. Factor of 36-39 rates the boat at 5 HP. If you concider it a flat bottom, hard chine you would drop it down to a 3HP. The 0.8 X factor-25 only comes into effect if the factor is over 52.5. Darin, I'm not trying to be difficult and I really don't care what size motor you use but I feel you should know what the CG rating is.

Hey Darin,
A buddy of mine built that boat about 20 years ago. It was a great boat and we carried it a lot of places.(it WAS 20 years ago) He never put a motor on it but it rows very well. I afraid the 9.9 will be pushing it.
Better get it in the water before it gets too cold!! John
