"The Old Carver" print

We found this in an antique shop today - please excuse the glare from the glass, it is actually brightly colored -

it is done in a folk artist sort of style, I almost passed, but she said she liked it and we should get it. Who am I to argue.

I wondered if any one here knew anything about it - was it part of a series or done as a fund raiser? I cannot find mention of it on internet searches although there is lots of info about both the carver and the artist.

it is pencil signed by the subject - the decoy carver Chancy Patterson and by the artist Ward E Herrmann - its numbered as one within a series of 500 and dated 4/28/1982

Preston Lowe, Tom Humberstone, or Glenn Sweet may be able to help, as they have a wealth of knowledge about Clayton area carvers. I sure that if you take it to the Clayton show in July, you will get your answers. Also stop at the Clayton Decoy Museum for info.

Jan/Feb 2001, Decoy Magazine has a good article, The Pattersons of Wellesley Island Surviving tragedy and toil by Harold W. Reiser III. Our landlord is related to Chancy Patterson through marriage, I will inquire if he knows anything about the print. My feeling is it was part of a fund raiser, as many good duck hunting and decoy prints are rooted in that area. It's folky, but I do like it - Good Find!

thanks Vince - please let me know if you find out anything.

i mentioned to my wife we should go to the show- i cannot remember how long it has been since I was up to it.

Rick - Will do. If it has been a while you will be very impressed with all the improvements, and river front parks Clayton now has. Plus the Wooden Boat Museum has expanded and been remodeled. The Decoy Museum has moved as well, and is impressive. Lots to see and do, besides the Decoy Show, it's a good vacation. Get to the Koffee Kove early, before you have to stand in line to get in - good breakfast, and lunch. Right now it's a 50-50 shot if we can make it this year. We always enjoy hanging out with the Runamuck Crew, they keep things very interesting and Fun.

rick, i have the same print! bought at an auction in geneva,ny couple years ago. it was packaged with a bluebill decoy also carved by him and a photograph of him and one of his hunting licenses from some time ago. i'm not home now or i could be a little more accurate. don't know if it was packaged for a banquet or not. its cool to see some of his stuff survive!
