Zack Taylor Oarlocks Question

Does anyone out there have a scanned copy of Zack Taylor's oarlock in his book "Successful Waterfowling" that they could share with me? I had a copy of his book and loaned it out to someone (I just can't remember who)!

Any other oarlock design would be helpful too!

Grace and peace,

David

Here are the drawings for the Widgeon and the Johnboat. This what you need? Is this resolution OK? I can e-mail jpegs to you if you prefer.

Dave, are you fixed on a folding oarlock? I thought long and hard when I was rebuilding my BBSB. The originals on my hull were the traditional folding style. I saw how they held up, and where the stresses were and knew they were a failure point over and over. Now I rarely use my oars anyway, but I decided on a fixed oar lock. The raised profile does not affect my ability to camo, offers another hand hold for moving the boat around in the muck, and has no parts to break. The folding oarlocks with the pivot through bolts, the supporting stick and twine all look like a PITA to me.

Nice workmanship, Paul.

Another great photo of your rig, Dave. That stanchion design is nice because of the cutout below - provides both a handhold and a way to drain the oarlock socket (especially important when ice is making).

Another approach: 1/2" I. D. pipe makes a nice stanchion - IF you can mount them securely. In this boat, I bolted them through oak frames (and sealed at the deck with 3M 5200):

In this boat, we bolted it through a plywood knee. They make a handy "bollard" for tying off to our "bank spikes".

Modern materials anyone? :

Scott, Blasphamy! Don't look at the epoxy, stainless steel screws, composite decking or outboard motor on my classic boat.... they aren't really there. Your mounts certainly over come some of the maint. issues I saw with the traditional folding oarlocks.

Dave~

Yes, those pipe stanchions were designed by Vlad the Impaler....

Actually, I have often thought of making them out of bronze rod and a short piece of bronze pipe. Maybe I should patent this design as "Sanford's Safety Stanchions" (they would hurt just as much - but not go in so deep). And, they could be mounted to most decks with though-bolts.

I'll probably just stick with wood....
