Carving Books

My nephew is wanting to get into decoy carving... Can anyone suggest books?

Books are a poor choice to use to carve into decoys. Most people use wood or cork.

I really liked the Richard leMaster books.
He focused on realistic decorative decoys but I always thought it best to learn to carve an anatomically correct bird and develop your own style from there.

Still available cheap on ebay.
I really liked "wildlife in wood" and "the great gallery of ducks"

Tom Matus has 2 pretty good step by step books out, one is a mallard the other is a wood duck.

"Making Decoys the Century-Old way" by Grayson Chesser

I'll second that recommendation. He adds just the right amount of instruction, history, and waterfowling heritage to his book. I really enjoyed it.

I think I gained a lot more with Matus' book than with Grayson's, and I'm a huge Chesser fan. All 3 are cheap when bought used.

Another I really like, is Costilow's "Making Traditional Hunting Decoys" book with Cans, Redhead & Scaup patterns. EDIT* I just saw the prices of this book.... Maybe you can find it cheaper, good luck.

Godin's patterns are the best there are, but now that they are out of print they are pricey.

Check out The Duck Blinds web site. Willy has an area called Cyber Classroom, and has lots of info posted. They also sell carving DVDs, which are very helpful. Good luck.

Decoys Simplified by Paul Casson. Keeps things simple for the hunter and beginer. I still like his simple paint patterns best.
