Craig Kessler and I just installed a kitchen/galley/shelf for a propane stove in CASSIOPEIA's pilothouse.

The whole story from last fall is at: http://www.duckboats.net/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=255752;search_string=Cassiopeia;#255752

We keep tying up loose ends - and working toward our ultimate vision for our big Broadbill rig. For example - back in September - we wired up all the lights and installed a pair of supports for the forward window. It both allows air into the pilothouse - and also allows us to tend the anchor from the safety and warmth of the 'house if we need to (as in Icy Winter....)

The "galley" is really just a shelf that will hold a propane cook stove - and fold up out of the way when not needed. The divided drawer will help to keep things a bit organized.

Here it is in ready-to-cook mode. The shelf is fastened to the 'house with a pair of brass hinges with loose pins - so the shelf could be removed off-season or for cleaning/maintenance.

It folds up against the starboard wall - right behind the helm. A loop of shock cord and a wooden "horn" secure it out of the way.

And - rather than stare at the undersides of any old drawer - I added a bit of inspirational flavor. The Happy Helmsman approves....

Craig is busy rigging the longlines.....we will have a total of 84 Model 72s for this season (with 20 more ready by next year)....

....and I was sewing canvas earlier this morning. Let's hope the Broadie-beaks hold up their end of the bargain.....

All the best,

I sure enjoyed this, Steve. Thanks for those pictures. Your workmanship is excellent. Loved that idea of the birds in flight. I agree because it is a touch of class! Sounds to me like there will be a good hunt that you will be involved in later this season.

steve, great set up
although I have a concern, I hate open flames on any kind of boat,
we do a lot of cooking on my boat all summer, and when I used to have a small novi that we lay out hunted out of,
I would always bring a small gen set, and an electric frying pan.
with a small honda 2000 you can run an electric skillet and a coffee pot if you like. run a heater, ect. all with no flames

the stuff we cook offshore at night with just that is great,
you can make almost anything.
a fryer with a 2" lip around the outside handles almost any
breakfast or hot lunch you could dream up.
no flames or frying pans smashing around if it is rough

again, great work on the boat , that is one custom rig for sure

I followed you link back to were you started and all I can say is WOW!!! It took a lot of vision and skill to take that old tired boat from where it was to the thing of beauty it is today. Nice work.

Steve,

Wonderful workmanship! I love the quality mind set you have shown on the Cassiopeia's pilothouse project.

What a great project Steve! Beautiful work on every detail. Should be a great, comfortable rig to hunt from. Thanks for sharing your progress. Hope you have a good season to test it out with.

When I was a kid all the boats had coal burning pot bellied stoves in them. When I was clamming my tong boat had an alladin kerosene heater with a cook top on it, Not really a problem if you are careful and use common sense. Rich

" Outstanding " Now is is the way to hunt Broadbill, great work approved by the Custom Builder. Have a great hunting season.

Steve, Par excellence. This west coast broadbill hunter would sure love to have a set up like that for supporting our campaigns against the wily fowl.
