Just booked a flight to Austin for Feb 12th to meet up with Mac coming in from the Philippines to do a little hog hunting and exploring Louis Lamour country. Man is this going to be fun.

We're going to be around Llano for the first bit, then planning to see some of West Texas. If any of you guys know someone who wants help with hogs and coyotes we might be able to help them out. File my cell number at 867-333-2945.

Also a "must eat there" list of Barq places over that way would be useful.

Are snake proof gaiters a real thing? I friggin hate snakes.

Mike

Take a sturdy pair of carhaarts and then put about 3 coats of exterior laytex paint on the sections below the knees and up the thigh. They will be indestructable brush busters and snake proof.

No pink allowed.

Shoot the hell out of the pigs.

Mike,

You have to go to Coopers while in Llano. Best bbq I've ever had. They're known for brisket, but you have to try the smoked prime rib too!

Enjoy!

Todd

When in Austin, do not go to "The County Line" for BBQ. Everyone who goes there is always told this is the best place for BBQ. Everyone from up her in MN who has gone there has not liked the BBQ. Rudy's is much better. Maybe it is a regional thing but us Northerners do not like County Line. One of the few BBQ places that doesn't suit me.

Mike,
Shouldn't need snake gaiters in Feb! Emphasis on the shouldn't! For research sakes, I'd say Llano is central Texas.
I'm just a smidge further North (2- 2.5 hours or so). I'll send you a PM with my contact information.. I'll gladly take a call and answer any questions you may have, about what to bring, places to eat etc.. I can also, maybe scrouge up a few places for y'all to check out hunting if you like!

I'll be in Texas that week hunting piggies as well!!!

Thouhpgh nowhere near you.

Best of luck to you.

If you hate snakes don't go to west Texas when it warms up. You should be just fine. If you forgot what they look like, Mike, maybe this will help.

Have fun on your hunt. If you do hit a warm spell, don't let your guard down. The ranch where I hunt ducks, the owner grabbed a bale of hay for his cows in January and damn near was bitten by a western diamondback that was sunning itself.

Good brisket at Salt Lick, although it's a ways south of downtown. Rudys is good. Love their tag line - Worst Bbq in Texas. If you have half a day you can stand in line for Franklins. Get there about 7AM for lunch.

Get me an address in Texas where you'll be and I'll ship your gator skull there.....you can tote it home and save the hassle of mailing.......
My Sisters needs a Black Bear Rug....you got one you want to sell or know of one?.........
Don't pay any attention to anything ANY YANKEE has to say about good BBQ....YANKEE's know NOTHING about GOOD BBQ.......trust me on this one.....please let me know if you need to know WHO is a YANKEE......

I think one of those Yankees could be me. If I was born in Alabama does this make it make it any better cred wise or am I still a Yankee?

I do know what I like and The County Line BBQ is not it. Their so called "moist brisket" is highly recommended by Austinites but is just not good flavor nor toughness wise. Personal choice on BBQ I realize. Rudy's and the Salt Lick are good in Austin.

Was going to smoke some ribs tomorrow but the temps are expected to be zero or below which makes BBQ tough.

Regarding the temps - I had to laugh. The Vikings play here tomorrow in an outdoor stadium. Suppose to be miserable. So the Vikes put out a message through the media asking that the fans please wear a t-shirt tomorrow. Had a good laugh over that. I'll be sitting downstairs watching from the comfort of my chair.

Another example illustrating electronic communication misunderstanding. I 100% know you were kidding me Steve and giving us northerners a hard time. This ribbing of northerners verses southerners has been going on as long as the site has been in existence. Such was my reply saying I have southerner in me being born in Alabama. Must make me qualified to rate BBQ. This too is meant to be be funny. We need smiley faces on TDBF.

At least I'm not from Iowa as they arent qualified nor smart enough to have an opinion about anything. Best thing ever to come out of Iowa is I-35. (Another joke between Iowans and Minnesotans)

Now if you want the ask about authentic Mexican food in Texas, I consider Taco Johns to be much better than Taco Bell.

It's pretty evident that Mark was thrown out of Alabama because he didn't like their BBQ and Minnesota was the only state that would accept him. :) Sorry Mike didn't mean to mess up your post.

I'll also recommend Rudy's BBQ in Austin. By far the most consistent bbq place I've ever been. Doesn't matter if they're busy or slow or it's 11 am or 3 pm, it's always good, and they have several locations.

Cooper's in Llano. I measure most places up to the them. There's another Cooper's farther out (Junction?) that I don't recommend.

You're going to love the Hill Country, it will probably remind you of a John Wayne movie with the rocky bluffs and cactus. The rivers are clear and cool.

Can't help you on any recommendations, but hope you and Mac HAVE LOTS OF FUN!

Holy! Thanks for all the good tips fellas. Great stuff. Plans are starting to gel a bit. I'm going to be getting into Austin on Feb 12th, so Dave if you are free, let's meet up that weekend.

Steve, no way I want to carry a skull through airport customs, so pop that thing in the mail to me at Blue Tarp on the Frozen Tundra, Canada. And I don't know of any black bear hides for sale right now, but if I shoot one this spring you can have it.

The Rookie was over here this week working on her bear from August, she's pretty proud of that.

Right now it looks like Mac and I will head west out towards Big Bend and check out some country for a future Aoudad hunt, maybe shoot a Javelina, up to the Carlsbad Caverns and back towards Austin. We have two weeks.

Mike

Herrrreee Kitty Kitty Kitty.......I can mail it to you there but do I need anything other than just the customs paperwork that says ALLIGATOR SKULLS on it?

Shoe size on you and Mack?......I've got two pairs of snake boots that you're welcome to use if they fit....size 11....I'll mail them to a Texas outfit and you can mail em back when you're done.....

Thanks on the Bear skin...

Mike,
The thought of an 'exotic' hunt like aoudad went through my mind when I first read your post. You have Mac, the good luck with you.
It sounds like a great trip.
Tom

If you wanted to see really nice caverns, and couldn't make it up to Carlsbad there are some on I-10 in Sonora (sonora caverns) that are really really nice, I've done their private spelunking tours, real cool stuff! And it'd probably be on your way out west!
