Found a great chew bone for a pup. NDR because this pup will be a family pet

In the summer of 1969, I was working for the Alaska Fish and Game department. I was assigned to Kodiak Island and to a group of guys who were set up in sneak teams of 2 to watch for illegal salmon fishing operations. We were dropped off by amphibious aircraft with the Grumman Widgeon being the plane of choice.

During a two week stint on the far end of the island almost due south of Deadman's Bay and northeast of Akhiok we had a couple of days where there was no fishing. By the way, this was definitely a remote area. With all the boats gone I did some beach combing. While walking I stepped on what I thought was a rock and of course had to investigate. Had I been inches off this spot I would not have seen it nor felt it. I could not believe my good fortune to dig out this whale's vertebra. With so much of the bone structure already worn away I have no idea how old it could be.

I want you to know that I waited for the brown bears to go take their naps before doing this. There were 13 of them feeding on salmon in this small creek area. Seeing a Kodiak brownie walk across the tundra reminded me of what a barn might look like on the fairway of a golf course.

I'm sure glad that I dried it out and then packed it from there to Anchorage, then to Wausau, WI, and finally to Socorro, NM. For the longest time it was my door stop in the office. It seems like I have found the ultimate chew toy for a pup. Most pups and or dogs seem to devour those so called "indestructible" toys in minutes/hours. Now I'm wondering how long it will last? Any guesses?

Shadow is just shy of 10 weeks old in these two pictures. She seems to really enjoy gnawing away at it. In fact, as I am typing this story out she just began chewing on it again!

Morning, Bob. I can tell you that it is roughly 7 inches across the top and it 8 1/2 inches tall. That could be classified as a mouthful.
