"Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

I've stopped at this intersection for decades while on the way to a variety of put-in spots along the River.
Today, i decided to take a picture of the sign.

It ALWAYS results in my coming to a complete stop, even at 0-dark 30 in the a.m. ;-) ;-)

Very nice of them!!! Funny sign, could be better designed for clarity.

Since you apparently started a thread of funny signs, how 'bout this sign we found on our travels this fall?

"Dad, are we almost there yet" How much further to KFC Dad?" "JUST 38 miles son....."

Every time I see this picture it cracks me up. This was taken somewhere between Gillette WY and the Powder River basin area of WY (place where the vast majority of our countries coal comes from). We were working at one of the Peabody coal mines for 3 weeks participating in a study to eliminate coal dust from rail cars transporting coal all over the country (coal dust fouls track ballast which then does not drain water. Water freezes and can then cause derailments so the thinking goes). We had a 3 weeks study underway spraying thousands of rail cars and then measuring coal dust at various mile posts from the mine sites.

One of my co-workers had an accident (bee sting and he was having a mild reaction) and I was driving him to the hospital in Gillette. The town we had been staying in was very small and there were two restaurants, neither very good. At this point in time KFC sounded pretty good and we were "Just" 38 miles away. A sign advertising a KFC 38 miles away - we were in the middle of not too much.

Speaking of signs, those "National Wildlife Refuge: Unauthorized Entry Prohibited" boundary markers at National Wildlife Refuges really hack me off.

On the refuges around my area, I know the rules, including what is "authorized" and what is not, and know that subject to reasonable local rules, I can hike, hunt, fish, boat, etc. But that is not the case when I travel, and it's often not easy to find a way to learn what the local rules might be.

I have no objection to reasonable restrictions to protect habitat or vulnerable critters, and I get that human use needs to be controlled. No motorized access on refuges would be fine by me, and if there are areas closed to all use to protect habitat, just let me know the reason and I'll gladly comply. I gladly stay off the beaches during piping plover and least tern nesting season, even though I give up some nice striper fishing as a result.

But I think the signs with no explanation or of what entry is "authorized" are off-putting and send the message that federal lands are off limits for use.

A sign that said something like "Welcome to YOUR National Wildlife Refuge. Please use these lands respectfully. Refuge rules are available at . . . . . ." would be much better.

Jeff, I'm glad I'm not the only one offended by the verbag used in these signs. Especially since I helped pay for them!
