2nd to last day of the season

For the northern Wisconsin zone. Went out late morning to try the noon hour hunt. On the way to the landing, saw that all the little ponds were frozen (first time this year). I was thinking to myself that this isn't looking good for the landing I was going to use for the day and sure enough, 3/4 inch of ice as far as I could see with the binoculars. Scrap plan A. Plan B had me winding through the woods on a narrow twisting trail with the boat attached behind. I'm thinkin that I won't make it back to where I want to go but somehow I made it. Got set up with 7 dekes, a chair, and my gun. Ended up with 3 ducks which isn't too bad. Funny thing happened. I'm sitting there enjoying the day and hear some commotion in front of me on the other side of the stream. All of a sudden a turkey busts from the stream bank and flies over to my side of the river not 25 feet in front of me. This one was followed by about 15 more. I watched them the walk aruond for a few minutes and then stood up and scard them all away back to the side of the river they came from. Man those are big birds.

Tomorrow will see me close out the northern zone and then Wednesday I'll be heading down the the southern zone as I hear from a buddy that the birds are thick down there. Maybe I'll remember my camera next time.

The Wis river was iced up on the flowages this morning Temps in the teens. Saw some Mallards in the running water but was deer hunting. Still some geese.
