Your advice on transom options

Guys,
You can never have enough boats, right?

I am looking at an aluminum deep V, 14' to 16' with a totally open floor plan, like the old Starcraft Mariner's had.

For hunting and boating in occasional rough water, do you think a splash well is necessary or are you good with a 20"/high transom and bilge pump(s)?

Obviously a splash well is a big asset but a lot of rigs in this length don't come with them.

I am looking at older Starcraft Mariners. Some of them have splash wells, some do not.

Thanks for your suggestions/advice.

I really like a splash well and would always take one over without. The well really slows the green water coming over the transom if you are ever in a situation where you need it.

On my snowgoose I have a 15 inch transom with a full height well which is probably 20 or 22. Maybe I'm spoiled but I get the willies with a regular transom (even 20 inch) in sporty weather these days.

Couple buddies have made nice open boats out of old crest liner Nordic 19's and some starcrafts. Rip all the consoles out redo the floor and throw. Tiller out back. Also firm believer of wells. Maybe find a sheet metal shop to bend you one up.

Never anchor stern to , or back into a heavy chop, and you'll never need a well. Most of the time...lol
