Cowling gasket adhesive?

We all know that outboards are a PIA, but a necessary evil. Well, test ran my Suzuki with muffs, no water coming out of the telltale..... Ran it in a barrel, still no water, even after running a piece of string trimmer line up the telltale.... My old Mariner was easy, take the cowling off, and the tube and clamps were right there... Not so with this Suzuki.... had to remove the top cowling, then undo a half dozen bolts to remove a lower cowling to see the tube running in an S shape that the trimmer line couldn't navigate until I unclamped it from the lower housing and pulled it straight (People tell me I have a round about way of telling a story. I don't understand why). I run the line in and feel it clear something, start the engine and there we go..... steady stream then after a couple of minutes I have water coming out of the exhaust confirming that the thermostat opened. Now I can go fishing.....

BUT...... when I took the top cowling off, the gasket separated from the cowling and I can't get the darn thing to stay on via friction. I need to get some adhesive. Will rubber cement work do you think? I think I might have some marine sealant if it hasn't dried up in the nozzle, but not sure if that's too aggressive of an approach. What would YOU use.

Jim,

Go to your local automotive store and get some "weather stripping adhesive" or "door gasket adhesive", same stuff.

Be stingy with it, and don't put the cowl back on until it has cured! If you put it on wet and it squeezes out, you will rip it getting the cowl off the next time.
