Report on my canoe trip to NC

Guys,
As you all know, duck hunters have to be flexible. My plan to float a small river for future duck hunting was brought to a quick halt by the reality on this stream: many, many trees had been brought down in the flooding last October in Hurricane Matthew. Floating was impossible.

So I went to some nearby small water lakes and enjoyed myself paddling. And then went about scouting in another area. So much fun to explore our good earth!

I took several photos of the modifications I’ve made on my 13’ Grumman canoe since buying it earlier this year. How I wish I had this boat when I hunted the public management areas in Michigan! Each photo has an explanatory note.

The link below takes you to my Flicker site. You may have to highlight the link and then right click for it to work.

Thanks for looking,

Larry

I think I've paddled one of those short Grumman's at a friend's duck blind, and withhout a modification like that it's a really unstable boat, at least with a single paddler. I'm guessing your modification helps.

I'm a big guy--280--and I find all the canoes shorter than about 15' to be pretty unstable. I think the sweet spot for canoes is in the 16-17' range. Still small enough to paddle (and portage) solo, but big enough to carry 2 adults and a decent load of gear. The difference between hiding a 13' canoe and a 17' canoe isn't much, but the difference in sea-worthiness is huge.

If you don't mind,Larry, would you tell me which river your floating. You can pm me if you want. Hope we can get out together again this year.
