Hello, Materials, and Plans question.

Hi everyone, duckboats.net has clearly grown since my last visit! Long time lurker, short time poster. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good plans for a scull boat? Additionally, I recently came into ownership of an ancient set of plans and patterns for a cedar strip pirouge. My question is what are some cheaper woods I could use in boat construction besides Western Red Cedar? I currently work in a custom woodworking/cabinetry shop so, I have access to everything I need but don't have the money to spend on high end Cedar. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The only plans I am aware of for scull boats are for a merrymeeting style in John Gardners Classic Small Craft book.
