Emperor Geese????

Looks like the hunt is only for AK residents as far as this years regs. Anyone know if there will be a NR hunt next year?

Probably will be up to the geese. So, what's wrong with starting out a program for a species who have been closed for around twenty five years? Makes sense that the first season would be designated for residents. Emperors do not travel very far. I am sure the fed is allowing this as an experiment, to see how the Emperors fare. Apparently, the only folk who have been collecting them have been the indigenous folks. Population is just beginning to show a rebound.
It is a good possibility that if the program succeeds, it will open to non Alaskans, on a lottery system, for a limited number of tags. Probably, the best way to end up with an emperor is to get a couple of birds from a licensed aviary person.
In the meantime, there are always specs.[whistle]

I shot one on the lower Columbia river in abut 2004.

It was with a bunch of Honkers and It looked kind of like a blue phase snow goose.

I took it to the goose check station and they had to call the head honcho and ask what to do, because it wasn't a regulated bird in our area.

They let me keep it and all of them said they'd never seen one so far south.

I gave it to a buddy and he had it mounted.

Awesome story - thanks!

Todd :)

Tod, Feds authorized the season , State gets to decide how to implement it.

isn't that how all waterfowl seasons go- Feds give the framework and the states set the specifics?

God, Feds authorized the season , State gets to decide how to implement it.

I know how the system works, my point is that with a resource that crosses state/international lines that everyone should have a crack at them. If the feds are managing, it indicates to me that it is a federal not state resource.

Tod, no one would argue that it's a not Federal resource. The Feds approved a sport season that the state requested. The state gets to decide how to implement it. In Connecticut the Feds approved the 2 black duck per day bag limit, the Commission could decide to be more restrictive and have a 1 bird in the bag or close it completely. Are you suggesting that the Feds should pick the season in each state? You might not like the days or big limits they pick.

I suggest that the state of AK allocate some of the federal resource to all users. In your CT example that would be like the state deciding that CT residents get 2 black ducks and nonresidents get none. This has nothing to do with you or the Feds, it has to do with AK's decision to allocate a Federal resource to its residents ONLY.

The only fault that I see of the feds in this issue is that ENFORCEMENT let the natives shoot hundreds or thousands of the birds annually with no penalty during a closed season during the recovery.

Not disagreeing with the logic

But it is not how the system works

For example - South Dakota strongly limits all waterfowl hunting by non residents

The birds are the same federal birds and doesn't SD have federal refuges?

Yes, true. I would complain about that too, BUT they allow NR hunting, not exclude it as AK is.
