Oregon Opener and a special trip

I have been making a trip down to Klamath falls for the Oregon opener for almost 20 years now. For the past 5 years my dad has joined us and this year my son finished hunters safety and was there also. It was fantastic having both of them with me on trip that I love to do. My long time hunting partner Carl brought his son along also for the first time. The teal cooperated nicely and we had 35 ducks by 11:00 and the kids had plenty of shooting. I think they both claimed to have hit almost every bird that fell from the sky. On one group that came in I was pretty sure I hit 2 , My dad hit 2, Carl hit 2, his Jacob hit 2 and my Jacob only claimed 1. I am an engineer so my math may be a little rusty but only 3 teal were taken out of the group. I guess its the "new" math. I normally do not hunt with a group of more than 3 but was happy to make an exception with the kids. A great time was had by all. Unfortunately when setting up the decoys my phone/camera was in my wader pocket and had to go a bit deep to right an upside down decoy. Phone got wet and stopped working. I took the battery out right away. As we were packing up on Sunday I put the battery back in and it started working again. Phone was saved but I have no pictures to share of this great trip.

That sounds like a great opener. I scouted yesterday for our opener and saw about 35 ducks all day. Looks like it’s going to be a short early flight hunt then go blast some togs.

I usually go through at least 1 phone per duck season.

Good luck with the rest of the season.

Lifeproof case. Haven't had a problem since I added one--and I've had full dunkings with my phone several times in both fresh and salt water.

Other folks swear by Otter cases, but I haven't used those.

I have an otter case but it is old and the flaps that plug the charging port and headphone jack don't work anymore. I keep ziplock bags in my coat and usually put the phone in one. Keeps it dry and you can still use it through the plastic. I also typically don't keep my phone in my wader pocket. However in the excitement of opening day and more importantly making sure my son was OK and not doing anything stupid I managed to forget about it.The ziplock bag has saved my phone more than once.

Nice to hear someone did good. Out of three parties (nine hunters) in the Oregon Straights we ended up with no birds for two of the parties. The other group got five ducks and two honkers on Monday morning before the nine hour drive south to home. Worst opener for killing birds, one of the best openers for the company. My 28 year old son came with us for the first time and my hunting partner of the last eight to ten years brought his eight year old son along. I just love this area, seeing people that I've gotten to know and hunting the fields and marshes.

Tight Lines ... Fred
