Winch strap suggestions

I'm a little frustrated that my winch strap broke after 30 months. This is only used during hunting season and it is stored in side all year. Do you have better suggestions where the winch strap rather than the cloth one that comes with the trailer?

Mine did the same thing when my strap was fairly new, I tied a couple nice half hitches in it and it has held a d lasted probably 10 years.

I prefer the strap over cable and rope. My point was that the straps are very strong and last a long time, it is the stitching that weakens them.

Plastic coated steel cable. Available at lowes and other hardware stores.Saves getting the inevitable metal strands in the hand handleing cable. Check load rateing on cable to deteremine size needed.

I had thought about that as well. My only concern was the Wire rope taking a set or cracking the plastic over time

Possible that it might take a set spooled on wench drum and also with plastic cracking. Only way to know is trying! Its not real expensive. Just used some for a support on 4 wheeler deer carrying rack that was putting to much strain on receiver mounting point.

What about synthetic winch rope? I see a possible problem with the winch not having a smooth enough surface. Synthetic rope has a different spec than wire rope for drum conditions ( at least in crane applications). With either for of rope, an issue would be spooling, and stacking.

How big a boat are you hand winching ? Guess it just all depends on load your trying to move. My wench strap on trailer under my 2072 is pretty tough. Only thing I,ve had to replace was hook which busted after about 2 years use. Chinese no dought!

It isn't that big of a boat. (17' Scaup) and a BUNCH of decoys. I just don't think I should be getting dry rot in 2 and a half years on the factory strap.

That's pretty short life for a winch strap. I,m sure there are replacements made of higher quality. Even the ones from Walmart I,ve never had fail from dry rot and my boats are outside year round. Anchor rope on my ghenooe trailer wench has been there for 20 years and not pretty but no problems so far.

Here is one I found interesting with a 4,000 lb strength and 1,333 lb load limit with a nice buckle type system for latching to boat.

I tried the cable, and plastic coated cable. I didn't like either one. They did not lay well on winch, and just seemed like a bigger pain. I went to higher breaking strength with no problem, until some jack wagon cut it at the boat ramp, fellow duck hunters can be so nice!!!!! I tied it on like stated above, and 8 years later still holding. I like the tie better than the sewn actually. I have a 18' heavy Polar Craft, with full aluminum blind, l;ots of weight.

I used stainless steel cable for 25 years until the winch stripped the gears.
Never had a problem poking myself with loose strands except the end.
Shrink-wrap solved that.
Buy good quality cable. I think I used 3/16 aircraft cable from a farm supply store.
