Central Ohio Swans

I was out driving yesterday and saw a flock of 15-20 swans. Not something I am use to seeing here. I wasn't really paying attention at first since there are lots of flocks of geese around. My wife commented on how big the lead goose was. I looked and said that is because it's a swan! Usually, I just see singles or pairs of swans.

I was 4 swans setting on the river that runs through town. They were mixed in with a bunch of Canada's setting on the down stream side of the dam since it provides the only decent open water in the area. Like you a somewhat rare sight. Although, there seems to be more and more swans wintering in our area each year. Cool to see them around.

Ohio "reintroduced" Trumpeter Swans and Sandhill Cranes several years ago.

Some Sandhill Cranes now populate western PA, as well as western NY.

If possible see if you can ID the Swans in your area.

Western PA is a major migratory corridor for Tundra Swans. Documented by PA Game Commission officer Ray Sickles, page 100,Travels And Traditions of Waterfowl by H. Albert Hochbaum, Copyright 1955.
