New Power for the Broadbill

When cleaning out Jeff's stuff I came across the first motor he ran on his Black Brant. Around 2000 his motor was giving him problems so he bought a new one and put the old one in the hawk house for another day. When I cleaned out the hawk house I loaded the motor up and took it to a mechanic. I ended up putting more into it than it is worth (new powerhead and rebuilt the lower unit) but dang it sure is fun to run. Not sure I've ever heard of anyone running a 25hp on a Broadbill but it actually performs very well and tops out at 32 mph. I'm already looking forward to the next time I take it to the river.

Money well spent, that Yamaha will always be a very desirable motor. As far as 25 hp on a Broadbill, H*** Yes!! I ran a 25 OMC on my AA Broadbill and never regretted it. That would run almost 30 mph. You may remember that I had a very short ride with a 35 on it, never did find out how fast it would go then. If I had to look for another motor it would be a Yamaha.

32 MPH huh? but what's it do loaded down with four guys, a dog and all their gear? [w00t]

Usually when kayaking a river it is recommended to file a "float plan" with friends or family "just in case", I suppose for this setup it would be more appropriate to file a "flight plan". Are you ready to invite those Jersey boys down for a spin? I'll bet you could run a higher pitch prop than what's on there now.

With the stock 11 1/4 pitch prop I went 30.6 at 6200 rpms which is over the 6000 spec. I repropped with a 13 pitch aluminum and didn’t see much top end change. Tach crapped out but I am pretty sure it is now under 6000.

Dave, 32 might make those Roy boat owners want to come race. I’ve got the home river advantage and will lose them in the turns. Heh heh.

Take your floatation out and you might get 32.5!

That made me laugh.

That's what I'm here for now that Dave is on the job enforcing the red gas tank policy.

That looks great Eric. I would have thought a 15 would be more than enough for that, but the 25's got some scoot to it for sure. I run a 15 on my SBDB and it's the prefect marriage. I've never clocked it, but it's got to be high 20's on slick water.
